Handbrake stud removal?
Hi,

I’m having to replace one of the studs for the handbrake to rear propshaft studs as it’s spinning. Before I take it apart has anyone got a guide on how to do so? I’m guessing it’s unable to be done in situ and will require the rear flange removing from the handbrake mechanism..

Thanks

They're not studs, they're 3/8" UNF x 1.3/4" bolts, and the heads are prevented from rotation by the close fit of a land on the back of the flange. The bolts are retained by a large circlip fitted to the flange.

To replace:

1) Disconnect the front flange of the propshaft and tie the shaft out of the way (spanner size is 9/16" AF but a 14mm will fit).
2) Release handbrake (making sure that the vehicle is chocked, of course) and remove the drum. It may be necessary to slacken off the adjuster, but usually isn't.
3) Drain the oil from the transfer box.
4) Remove the retaining nut from the flange, remove the flange.
5) Remove the large circlip from the back of the flange followed by the four captive bolts.

Reassembly is the reverse of the above, but don't forget to refill the transfer box with oil.

Note that it is a good opportunity also to replace the rear oil seal if necessary.
