Bit of steel on transfer case drain plug magnet | |
Hi all, new to forum,
Hoping for advice.
Recently replaced clutch on puma2,4 with mt82, during test drive, stopped and engaged diff lock, then tc jammed, and eventually "unjammed" with a bang.
I then drained tc oil and found a small bit of steel on drain plug magnet, looks like something that would house a pin in 4mm or 5mm diameter.
Have heard that if incorrect bolts are put in when tc joins transmission, a bolt too long can touch a gear and lock tc??
See pictures,
Ps- since this happened, everything still works fine, no noises, diff lock works, but obviously something has let go.
Any advise would be appreciated.

Regarding the bolt statement, that is correct. The bolts used to bolt the transfer case to the adaptor housing are not all of equal length, and a longer bolt in the wrong hole can push and bind the gears.
As such I have replaced the bolts with studs, glued in the transfer case when I had the transfer case out, and bottom inspection cover open, so I can see how far in the stud goes..... this to ensure no oil leaks, and prevent that mistake of using longer bolt in the wrong hole. Also no need to drain the oil if have to remove the TC
Sorry, difficult for me to say where the metal is coming from. you have 2 options...
1. Continue driving, but with a risk of leaving you stranded somewhere.
2. Open to investigate. 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing
