Door Locks

So, low temperatures hit earlier this week and the inevitable happened: the door locks were frozen solid and I could not get into the vehicle. That I was in a hurry and receiving helpful comments seemed to have no effect. This all happened despite my lagging the handles and the locks with pipe insulation foam the night before to prevent/reduce water moister and lessen any freezing.

Does anyone have any fail-safe techniques to stop the locks freezing and to guarantee entry to the Defender actually when you need to use it rather than when it wants to let you in.

I regularly use Abus lock lube PS88 (good squirt after every off road trip or vehicle clean) and so far this winter no freezing up issues. It also worked on freeing up a rusted up gate padlock so seems to be a good recovery aid too. It comes in a small 50ml can which is small enough to carry in my day sack.
Shop around for it though because it ranges massively in price - you should be able to get it for around £8 per can

A perennial problem, I found that by moving from a 3 door 90CSW to a 5 door 110CSW (with central locking) I increased the chances of having at least one door unlock in cold weather by an amazing 66%!

Well that's the first time I have heard that given as a reason to buy a 110 CSW

It is somewhat ironic that when owners wish to gain access to their Defender they are prevented from doing so, but scrotes and miscreants seem to be able to hop in and drive off with very little hindrance.

2000 Defender 110 Td5 XS CSW Epsom Green

So I live in the great white north and we still have three feet of snow on the ground here. Regularly goes to -20C but its raining today (yay! Snow going down the drain). I drive my 110 all year long and I wash it all winter.

You should just squirt some WD 40 into the barrel and let it be. WD = “water dispersant” it is a very crappy lube but a great moisture protectant and dispersant. I use the power locks and rarely use the key. When I first bought it I blew out and cleaned the locks with an air line and then sprayed WD on it and have never needed to do it again and that was eight years ago. It may be that humidity gets into it
and freezes where you live so regularly doing this would prove beneficial.
