Replacing bolts and nuts
Probably a silly question, but how would I go about in replacing bolts and nuts. Do I always have to replace them with original LR parts, or can I order generic bolts and nuts. For instance I am looking to replace the prop shaft bolts. What kind do I choose? Is there an easy way to replace them? Thank you all!

Ideally like for like I'd say unless you know better. Most will be stamped with a tensile strength (E.g. 8.Cool and usually thread matters especially if it's fine due to the clamping force it exerts.

Propshaft bolts are a bit special because of the space they work in - think they're still an imperial thread despite having a metric head size (or it's close enough). Ed

Propshaft are 3/8" UNF with a 9/16" AF head.

The front axle still has fasteners with BS, UN and metric threads.

Generic are fine as long as they are the same or equivalent size and grade.

When refurbing my axles recently I found most of the bolts were grade 10.9 A lot of the bolts are also bi-hex and also not quite standard lengths. If you get the bolts as per part numbers they also have threadlock on them. I was going to look at using fixings I had at home but the tended to be 8.8, hex head and fully threaded.

It's never a good idea to replace a bolt (which by definition is part-threaded) with a setscrew (which by definition is fully-threaded).

Generally the head style doesn't matter in engineering terms. Landrover are very prone to using flange head fasteners because on a production line they're cheaper than a hex head with separate washer.

Thanks all, after your advice I decided to go for identical replacement parts. Thanks!
