R380 gearbox identification without a serial number
I cannot make out any numbers on the identification flat area beside the drain plug on my R380 gearbox, is there any other external way of identifying it’s suffix or a number anywhere else?
it Is a1995 Defender 90 with a 300tdi engine.

not sure if you have had a go at cleaning it up
have tried wire wool after a light sandpaper and a cost of white paint , spray is fine or maybe a chalk pen and then wipe the excess off . doesn't work every time but can pull old numbers up.

Road chalk is usually quite good at bringing out numbers on engines and other bits. Just rub it over the area where you think a stamped or raised number should be.

It’s just wax so it shouldn’t cause any issues and will just disappear after a while.

It may have been ground off. Reconditioned boxes can be de-serial numbered.
