Hands free microphone problem
I fitted a JVC/Kenwood KW-M745-DBT unit around two years ago and until recently everything worked fine.

The hands free phone option is (or was) a useful feature, however the microphone doesn’t work properly now. I don’t think the microphone is faulty though, this is because when I press the phone icon on the screen and say “Hey Siri call xxxx” it dials the number. The person that I’m calling can’t hear anything.

Somehow the microphone is being muted. I have reset the unit to factory settings, but this didn’t work.

I’ve been around in circles looking through the menus on the unit and I can’t see anything of relevance in the manual.

Any thoughts anyone?

Where is it located? It’s a problem on all Defenders due to background noise.
On top of the cowling behind steering wheel is about the best place but even then not ideal.
Perhaps you could replace it, but that might not be the issue. $W33T $0U7H3RN $UG4R

It’s on the B pillar and was working perfectly fine until recently. If it can pick up “Siri” commands then surely it should also work for ordinary speech?!

As mikes are relatively cheap I will try a replacement and see if that makes a difference.

That’s true, sometimes these things do just stop working and like you said they aren’t overly expensive.

Damp and corrosion inside electronics wouldn’t surprise me. $W33T $0U7H3RN $UG4R

Just a thought. Is "Hey Siri" being sensed by your iPhone and not through the microphone as you suggest. The Siri command is then being sent from your iPhone to the head unit totally bypassing your car mike. Defender 90XS SW

Yes, that is a very good suggestion! I’ve picked up a new microphone for a tenner and I will test it out as soon as I get a chance.

Check the manufacturers website for a firmware update. Usually a download, send to USB stick, hove it into the stereo, switch on, update, restart, all good 👍 2009 Defender 90 CSW 2.4 TDCI.

I suggest it might be very worthwhile to make sure that the microphone is still plugged into the back of the head unit. With heavy cables vibrating around behind the dash it’s very easy for the microphone to work it’s way out. Dave

I will certainly try a firmware update - just downloading now!

I have already checked and cleaned the connection to the mike.

Oh dear! I've just updated the firmware and now the unit won't turn on!!

I will have to investigate later as I have to go and visit my wife in hospital.

Nightmare. Did you follow the update guide PDF part way down the page - there are two parts to it. The ARM part and the MCU part.

Yes, i followed the instructions. Tomorrow i will have a look and perhaps disconnect the battery for a while if it still doesn’t switch on.

Ooohhh. Censored . I searched for the model number and added "bricked" there is an issue around radio stations.

On a previous device I owned, I updated the firmware and mcu = black screen.

Following forum advice, I downloaded an older version of the firmware - and flashed that. Then updated to the next version, then next version etc up to the latest version.

The issue seemed to be that each update didn't wipe the memory fully so by going from an earlier to the very latest left traces of the old programme causing it not to boot properly.

Hopefully you will get sorted quickly and please let me know how you get on 😊 2009 Defender 90 CSW 2.4 TDCI.

That sounds like a plan. I will see if it’s working tomorrow and try disconnecting the battery if it doesn’t. Finally I will try the firmware version option.
