Just out of interest, are these trailers rated to more than 750kg that they need a brake, or is it just for driving safety and pleasure? I have had 750kg rated trailers with run-up brakes (conventional drum - cable) and especially on a drum braked Series that is nice.

Here in France (Europe) the rules are well and truly f&cked up where for registration and insurance reasons people buy (large) trailers (down) rated to 750kg without the need for brakes (cheaper) to then overload them habitually (how does the average person know) obviously causing a dangerous situation.

They’re around 650kg unladen with a load rating of around 1100. So the max weight in theory would be 1750kg and I’m sure most would agree you’d want brakes with that amount of weight behind you. They’re also built heavily enough that I would imagine they can cope with a lot more weight. Coupled with the idea they may be used in abnormal/extreme conditions I can see why they’ve got such a serious set of brakes.

The ULW of a GS Penman is 620kg and the payload is 1130kg, resulting in a gross weight of 1750kg.

So yes, they are required by law to have brakes.

Penman master brake cylinder
John,

Sorry but I can't pm you as I've only just joined the forum.

Can you tell me where you got a master cylinder for your penman brakes?

I've managed to damage the reservoir on mine and could do with finding a replacement. If you've still got your old one and the reservoir is intact I'd be happy to make you an offer!

Hello!

Yes they are standard Citroen xantia brake calipers.

There are a few variations of the caliber as I found when trying to buy the correct seals for them, I ended up buying a few different seal sets and sending the ones back which weren’t required.

Have you checked the cable and operation of trying to move the hand brake lever on the caliper manually?

hi . thanks for the quick reply
the cables move freely.
The little black leaver on the drivers side caliper has absolutly no resistance.
It dosent do anything. passenger side seems to work.
do you remember the models of xatia calipers which maybe suitable?
i may be able to find one here or buy a new replacement one.
thanks
GG
