Cheap eBay sidesteps crap paint

Only 1 month in, and my sidesteps are knackered. The paint is micron thin and stone chips have caused havoc.

I've now removed them, and will strip them and repaint with multiple coats of Hammerite.

Also, mudflaps have been ordered. If you have cheap sidesteps and no mudflaps, this is your future.

Wow that's bad.

l had a set of £200 Ebay sidesteps and they seemed a lot better than that. For a start the steps were made from a type of plastic so wouldn't corrode at all. The brackets weren't painted.

However l was offered a set of OE sidesteps at a good price and swapped them out.

Top photo are the OE ones. Lower photo Ebay copy parts

I’ve now reinstalled my steps after giving them multiple coats of Hammerite smooth black paint. Spray for the tubes and underside of the steps, and brush-on paint for the brackets.

While they were off I realised how useful they are as I really missed using them to get into the car, and I’m 6’2”.

I also finally fitted genuine “classic” mudflaps as well which weren’t in stock when I picked the car up. Censored of a job. When doing the fronts, I do recommend removing the plastic panel in front of the door rather than trying to fiddle it on with the “Powerful UK unofficial method) as it’s very tricky to get the washers and nut on the lower bolt.
