2003 TD5 Rear discs and pads...
Hi all, does anyone have any recommendations for rear brake kits? Im only looking for standard not performance as its a standard TD5. There seems to be so many options out there with kits offering different componants? What do i need to undertake the job?

please be gentle as I'm still quite new to defender ownership Laughing

Picture of my current discs so you understand why I'm changing

This is what you require.

If the rear callipers look even slightly crappy change them. They don’t tend to last well on Defenders in my experience.

These will last longer than standard.

I have a 1993 90 with a 300tdi rear axle, so standard callipers, discs etc.

I changed my calipers and discs for britpart but used quality pads. I did my wheel bearings and seals plus changed my bolts etc.they fitted OK.

I fitted stainless grease nipples but also had to replace the brake pipes as they broke when taking them off, so ended up replacing the rear flex then changing the brake fluid.

So beware of the job creeping further than you originally thought.

Thanks all! Yes I'm slightly worried about the job escalating so want to make sure I have all the parts I need and just do it once (without spending a fortune ideally)

The calipers don't look too bad but no idea what the pistons are like, I'll get a price with and without the calipers see how much extra it would be

I assume best places are Paddocks or LRParts?

You don’t need upgraded parts, standard spec items from a reportable manufacturer (not Britpart…) will be absolutely fine.

Delphi, Mintex, AP Lockheed etc. all will be fine. Advice above re. calipers is sound. It will be worth having some spares of the caliper bolts handy too, and don’t forget the consumables for the wheel bearings etc.

100% agree with Mossberg 👍

If you’re going to change the discs, make sure you have new bolts to hand, and be prepared for a fight getting the old ones out. Also do be aware that you’ll have to remove the hub, so again make sure you have the new gaskets, seals etc. to hand.

As already said, also a good time to inspect your wheel bearings and adjust/grease/replace as required.

Your calipers don’t look any worse than mine which work perfectly.

Mintex pads for me and Delphi discs.

Good luck 🤞

Yeah for the caliper bolts get the right socket 12 point - 13mm I recall (or was it 15) and a long breakerbar ideally with ratchet. Don't mess up that bolt with a crappy tool. Its a little tight for an impact and not too much room to swing a breaker bar either.

I cracked (as in split open) my socket on my range rover (same bolts) and had to wait 48 hours for a new socket to arrive to finish the job. you got to have the right tools

It should be a 12 spline, or bi-hex, socket. Clean the bolts the best you can and then get a good fitting socket. You really don't want to round these off if you can help it.

Make sure you treat the bolts with plusgas for two or three days before you attempt the job. Same goes for the brake pipes and the bleed nipples.

I bought the full front and rear kit from LOF, just the road spec ones. Its nice as it comes with everything you need to save faffing and ordering a whole list of things. I got the bearings in mine incase I need them, although my ones were fine its nice to have the correct spares.

Its also nice to support a business like LOF who create decent kits and bits for us Landy owners.

Also invest in a decent brake pipe spanner as a standard open ended spanner is more likely to round off the brake pipe fittings. Available from all the usual places, something like this -

Worth getting both sizes as you never know when they'll come in handy

Make sure you have a decent quality socket for those, i found they are 1/2 not 13mm. Some Censored who serviced the brakes on mine, had badly rounded the bolt, so we had to cut the bloody bolt, and then cut the caliper in half, so it would come off the disc. Then it was just a case of grabbing the stud a molegrips. A simple job turned into a nightmare for us!

So stock up on spare parts before you tackle this! Defender TD5 90 ---/--- Peugeot 306 HDI hatch back
