2.4 TDCI starter / coolant / heater / loss of power issue
Hi All, spend most of my time on the disco 4 site but have been helping a mates dad with his 2009 2.4 90 pick up and I have few questions if I may.. Bow down It’s a bit of a waffle but I’d rather tell all I know in case it’s all related!! It started around December when his 90 would loose power intermittently then it would only turn over randomly and then it smelt hot and he couldn’t get heat in the cab, so far I’ve replaced the starter now starts first time, found a corroded connection on the ‘main relay’ under the drivers seat which appeared to help with the loss of power, coolant/ heating wise the temp went high when he was driving and he had a loss of power (I believe this is correct if the temp gets to high) and generally it smelt hot, I’ve changed the stat by the radiator and bled the system as per the WSM, it no longer smells hot but I can’t get heat in the cabin, engine temp rises quickly under normal driving conditions to half way then comes down if left at idle so I guess the stat is working? If I open the bleed screw by the heater control when the engines up to temp there is water pressure present with hot coolant the same for the expansion tank, if the engine is cold I can remove the bleed screw without any coolant present, the expansion tank stays at the cold mark, if I start the engine let it get to temp then open the bleed screw I get heat in the cabin but of course loose coolant, it’s not always a constant flow of coolant from the bleed valve but comes in waves once the initial pressure has gone, the heater control valve has been replaced historically so I’m fairly confident it’s good also assume the heater matrix is good a I get heat with the bleed screw open. As soon as I close the bleed screw all goes cold again, am I missing something Is there air somewhere? Also read there maybe a stat in the coolant pump make up but unsure If this year an engine have it? I’ve a GAP iid tool and have no codes logged at present, it’s also had (not by me) a recent battery, headlight and ignition switch (no new key) any advice gratefully received!

Try replacing the CHT sensor which has been discussed recently on here it isn’t expensive.

Is it losing any coolant or staying at the level it should be?

As the battery has been replaced, check the connections are tight and the main ground lead secure.
Check the voltage on it at rest and when motor is running to check voltages are appropriate.

How old is the water pump? No Guts, No Glory.

Thanks for the info, does the CHT sensor have some ‘control’ of the coolant system or are you thinking it could affect the starting? Occasionally the glow plugs don’t come on when expected, turning the ignition off then back on fixes this
He did say he topped the coolant up a few weeks ago about a litre from memory, I looked for leaks but couldn’t see anything on the ground or around the hoses, I guess a small leak could evaporate before leaving a mark, I believe the water pump is original it’s done 91k, alternator was checked (not by me) when the battery was replaced, I did check connections and earths when investigating the starter motor all appear fine, as for head gasket doesn’t appear to be any oil in the water or sludge in the oil filler, is there anything else to look for in regards to the head gasket?

On the 2.4 the CHT sensor feeds to the engine ECU and the coolant temperature is calculated from it and this is displayed as coolant temperature on the dash gauge. I believe it is also used to decide if the glow plugs should be activated. So this could be one of your issues. At circa £30 it’s not expensive to replace and would be my first thing to change.

Re the other issues around the heater etc, it could be air in the system, could be coolant expansion header tank cap, but if not does seem to indicate a head gasket issue.

If you arent getting the glow plug light on a cold engine and non start check the main relays under drivers seat for corrosion or poor terminal connection.

Thanks all, I’ve checked and repaired the relays under the drivers seat, I think I’ll replace the sensor and check / bypass the cabin heater control valve to rule it out, just hoping it’s not the head gasket I’ve done some searching and it looks cheaper to buy a second hand engine if it’s the case

Update
Had some time today to carry on investigations, still using water still no heat in the cabin.
Spotted some coolant residue near the water pump, removed the pump to find the below pictures which gives me or should I say the wise members of this forum more questions! Where has the leak come from, pump? Gasket? Casing? Is it a common failure? What should I look to replace?
Also checked the heater control valve it’s a bit stiff compared to a new one, I’m guessing the loss of water is causing the lack of heat?
I plan to flush the heater matrix, rad, oil cooler and pipes tomorrow.
Any thoughts on the leak appreciated! Bow down

Mine leaked the last few weeks and I replaced mine too, coincidence likely caused by the freezing temps we had.
It happens.
First one I had went on the gasket between the two pump casings.
The last one on the joint between the pump and manifold.
I replaced the entire coolant whilst I was at it this time. No Guts, No Glory.

Valuable info, I think this one was letting the coolant down the shaft if that makes sense?
New one and gaskets fitted yesterday I carried out the bleed procedure as per WSM but keep getting air in the heater control valve, ill take it for run round today to get it to temp and see if that helps

Went through the bleed procedure a couple more times and drove it round for a bit all appears well and there’s heat in the cabin!!
Was a little confused that the expansion tank and heat control valve appear to be the same level but I guess that’s how it’s designed!!
Thanks for all your helps I’ll be back next time something else crops up!!
