Price Increase!!
Hi All,

Ordered a new defender 110 in May 2022 - with expected arrival around Dec/Jan 22 (based upon their initial timeframes).

Around September time I received a call from my dealership to say the price had gone up.... (approx. £2-3K) - I didn't think they could do this once an order had been placed? apparently they can? - any advice on this welcome.

I received a call today to say my car has arrived at the dealership (which I due to collection on 1st March), but the interest rate has now gone up from 6.4% to 8.9% - increasing my monthly payments/final payment - again, I didn't think this was possible?

Once all fully paid up I would of paid over £10k more than the amount originally signed up for in May 22!!

My predicament is, I have waited 10 months for the car and REALLY want to the car, but this is a Censored take and would equally like to tell them to stick it up their behind (but I know they will sell the car to someone within a matter of hours....possibly minutes).

Anyone having/had similar issues?

Can they do this?

Thanks,

Jack

I've never known a car dealer guarantee to hold the price as originally ordered particularly on a vehicle that is on extended delivery.

I'm afraid you have to ask yourself the question - in your eyes is the vehicle worth another £10k? Defender 90XS SW

I had the same issues with mine, ordered a MY23 in Oct 2021, delivered MY23.5 Oct 2022 with approx £5k increase. UTTTTTER BS, but seemingly endless price increases are covered in the sales contract, right up until the day of delivery. They must inform you in advance, and you have the choice to cancel the contract and walk away - but after you've waited over a year, and you look at used car prices, if you need the car this year, it isn't really an option). OR you have to swallow the cost increases. On the plus side, mine did come with some nice spec upgrades. But they were nice to haves I didn't need.

I made all sorts of escalations to JLR corporate (useless), even started poking around Tata executive email addresses. But to no avail - they pointed squarely at the dealership to mange pricing adjustments.
I also escalated to the senior sales director of the dealership group. Who was ok, apologised, but neither of them budged on price. Ultimately, I accepted my fate, and bent over the barrel. I did get a couple of little freebies but nothing compared to the price hike.

On the Interest rate hike, my dealer actually fought very hard to honour my originally agreed interest rate - (speculation) I guess because they hadn't known about the problem until the actual day of handover, and at that point they were on rocky ground in terms of breaching their contract. Not sure if the dealership or JLR gave in but they did eventually honour my lower interest rate. I don't know if your dealership is willing or able to fight it, but I would definitely threaten to go elsewhere for finance if they don't honour the originally agreed interest rate. That might change their minds, it might not. But worth a shot.

Some considerations I went through before deciding to stick to the original order:
    New prices will never drop.
Used LR prices were equal or more then RRP at the time.
Ordering from other manufacturers was equally arduous and likely to take another 6-9 months which I couldn't wait for.
Other manufacturer used prices were also higher than RRP.
Warranty was very important given the complexity of the vehicle, something big likely will go wrong during my ownership.
Dealers at the time had no new stock, but I think that might be changing.
I also lowered the annual miles, and extended the finance term to try to mitigate the PCP hike

Perhaps have a look around and see if there are any other order cancellations other dealers, or nearly new for sensible money. I would also not be entirely opposed to a disco with a few more luxuries as an alternative.

After taking delivery and driving for a few thousand miles, I have to say, it's a really really good car. The trauma of the waiting time and purchase have certainly faded, and the kids barely remember they used to get 3 square meals a the day..

I wish you good luck on the finance negotiations.
