LT230 rear output seal - installation depth?

I have a 110 TD5 Defender, MY2002.

Dealing with changing the LT230 rear output oil seal, I am interested in whether the new seal should be drifted in so that it contacts the bearing track, or should it be a shallower depth.

There seems to be different opinions in some of the theads covering this topic.

Any information would be greatly appreciated.

It implies that the seal should be installed deep enough so it 'just touches the circlip'.

As Steve has said. If however you are re-using your output flange then pay attention to where the original seal ran, check the flange is not scored. If there is any wear then adjust the seal fitment depth a little so the sal runs on a fresh part of the flange.

Nothing worse than doing the job only for oil to seep past the seal.

Thanks geobloke,

I am using a new flange, so its probably best to stick to the manual instruction, with the seal "just touching the bearing circlip".
