I think most of your issues would be coverd with new glow plugs. White smoke is a sign of unburnt fuel which might improve with glow plugs and an injector cleaner on cold start but is more like injectors needing a refurb Ride like you stole it!!

As above - new glow plugs and a heavy dose of injector cleaner.
Don’t jump to looking into injector Refurb if it’s running tidy once warm. 2008 2.4 110 Utility Station Wagon XS. |

Yep mine has refused to start for the last two days until it got a bit warmer.
Easiest way to tell if you have misbehaving plugs is to get a DC clamp meter around your battery cable and measure the current on ignition position 2. It should be approx 40 amps if all the plugs are behaving normally (10a per plug ish). There is also normally about 3A of other system load, but you can work that out once the plugs have switched off. Mine for comparison was around 20 amps today so looks like I have several slightly duds, or two completely dud. North Cumbria Search and Rescue - Team Leader |

I just bought a set of Bosch ones. £42 from GSF.
I would have thought labour for a garage that knows what they are doing should be less than 2 hours as long as they behave and come out. We'll see how long it takes me, almost certainly longer than that |

Not too bad price wise then, the injectors are quite a bit that’s for sure. $W33T $0U7H3RN $UG4R 🇬🇧🏴🏴🏴🇮🇪🇺🇸⛽️🛢️⚙️🧰💪 |

If you can get slight access to them. Spray some WD40 a couple of days before- to allow time to penetrate the components/threads. Then have a go at the glow plugs after the engine has been warm. 2008 2.4 110 Utility Station Wagon XS.

You might find it even more effective to use a dismantling penetrant (for example PlusGas) rather than WD40, which is primarily a water-displacing spray.

i had exactly the same symptoms as you, garage replaced all my glow plugs yesterday and it started instantly this morning. Weve been having some chilly weather up here in Scotland this week. Garage had problems removing all 4 so i'm glad i got them to do it - £180 well spent, you should have seen the crud inside the inlet manifold

Good to hear it fixed the problem, hope it is the same for me.
I cleaned the inlet manifold and replaced the gaskets a few weeks ago so at least that job is done. It was very mucky. |

Mine starts ok ish when cold, I’d say about 2 seconds longer than a warm day.
But it runs very rough with white smoke for a mile or 2, but then runs perfect very smooth powerful and no smoke. I’ve changed the FCV, MAP, MAF, glow plugs only thing it can be for me is the injectors. I do find running redex diesel cleaner through winter helps the cold starts. IME. 2008 2.4 110 Utility Station Wagon XS.

Mine was not starting too well over the past year or so, so I eventually changed the glow plugs this year ready for the cold weather. Problem solved and not had any starting issues in the latest cold weather.
Decided to do it myself .. inlet manifold off .. a bit penetrating oil before I started and no issues. Click image to enlarge |
