check earthing start with battery and work your way around

I had similar but would just cut out, all dials off,
Sometimes it would restart almost straightaway, other times i would need to restart, It could do it once a week / month or 3 times on one 10 mile journey... hot / cold etc made no difference. It always restarted, but unnerving as your passing a truck on a motorway.. No codes on my code reader. I change the starter relay (under seat) still did it, then we changed the steering ignition key. All sorted |

Got Ian at IRB to change the ignition key/switch in the week. Weird things were happening which made me doubt my sanity, but finally I had a witness when it failed to start three times in a row. The barrel was very well worn and the switch itself was loose in the housing - it’s held in place with two tiny self-tappers.
Ian always replaced the entire barrel (which needs new barrels in the drivers and rear doors) because it all wears together. The new barrel is much tighter and compared to the old one it’s night and day and I’m sure that the looseness of the lock barrel, with keys swinging around, caused the barrel and switch to wear even more. So I still have this intermittent problem, having checked as much earthing as possible and disconnected accessories such as a winch.
I noticed references to the previous owner having a gel battery in a dual battery setup. Is it possible the alternator setup was changed for a gel battery and might be causing problems now it has a conventional lead acid battery? |

Removing the alternator is not a big job and you will be able to see the part number label on the side of it to check if it’s a std landrover one.
However I expect it’s a standard one and as per above posts I would check out your ignition switch as the culprit. Lots of posts on here re the ignition switch, just do a search. |
