Rear Camera View Changed
Hi,

Hoping you can help! 110 HSE 240D

Couple of weeks ago, all cameras and sensors failed. They were replaced. During the replacement, accidental damage was caused to the windscreen (whilst the Defender was being washed), a new windscreen was fitted. Upon collection, on selecting reverse, the rear camera view was partially showing the bottom part of the rear mounted spare wheel.

Tried the normal turn off/on wait etc fix but to no avail. Returned to the dealer and explained the situation. I had just returned a courtesy car which was the same model of Defender and the rear camera was normal with no sign of the rear mounted spare showing on the touchscreen display.

A number of Defenders at the dealer were checked and none of them had the same issue. I was initially told it was a software update and it was meant to be like it! I asked them to look further into the issue as I though it unlikely a software update would be done to partially obscure the view in the rear camera.

The dealer requested I return a few days later and leave the car with them for 3 days. Half way through they called to say, this was a planned software update with the change and that all Defenders now have the same view.

I do not believe this to be the case and advised them of that (I found the idea ludicrous tbh). I, at the time of this call, was sitting in the courtesy Defender they had given me. I took a photograph whilst in reverse gear so they could see that Defender had a normal view on the camera and sent it to them.

They are now looking into the problem (again) but still seem to be of the view all Defenders do this. The rear camera itself has physically been checked as has the spare wheel, both are fine and where they should be.

So apologies for the longwinded description but can I aks for help, has anyone elses Defender suddenly had this change, if not do any of you fancy posting photographs of your rear camera view on the touchscreen so I can prove to the dealer not all Defenders do this and it most certainly is not a change? Also anyone with any ideas as to what could be wrong?

If, I am wrong and it is a software update, what on earth are LR thinking of going from a clear view for reversing to seeing the bottom part of the spare on the screen?

Thanks as always for anyone's help.

I cannot post a photograph of the view sadly as the car is still at the dealer.

l can't see how software could alter what the camera can see, unless it's on a motorised platform !!

Have you checked the actual camera in question to see if it's correctly aligned/fitted?

Thanks for the reply. I tend to agree with it being a physical issue rather than software, LR have said the camera has been checked today and all is well. I have suggested is it worth switching the camera with one from another Defender to see if the problem still exists.

You can probably tell from my post I am a tad peeved with what I am being told by the dealer and to just accept it is what it is!

They will not accept the issue happened following new camera modules and a windscreen replacement, to them it is just a coincidence. Maybe it is but then again...

Can you compare the camera with another Defender, look carefully at it and see if the alignment is the same, it could be the lens looks okay but the camera module isn't seated properly in the housing behind.

Thanks again, I will suggest it to them when we speak again in the morning. They seem so set it is software and only LR can sort it (not the dealer) but hopefully tomorrow will be more productive.

I thought the rear view camera could be adjusted up & down and left to right by using the buttons on the mirror itself. It may only be by a small amount but it may just resolve your issue.

Sorry, misread the initial post. Yes, I’m referring to the rear view mirror/camera and not the reversing camera. The caffeine obviously hadn’t woken me sufficiently when reading the post this morning.

Thanks again for the replies. It would be great Buzz if the rear camera could be moved as that would easily solve the issue!

Update from the dealer, alignment is fine on the camera and they maintain every Defender they have has the same view other than the loan one I have here. They are going to switch the camera from the loan Defender onto mine.

So from the updated info, the presumption is all of the Defenders on this forum should now have the same view where the bottom part of the rear spare is seen on the reversing camera, I am not sure if this is true?!

Any suggestions as how to proceed with the dealers? Thanks for any help.

on my MY23 when reversing I see the bottom of the spare tire in the pivi screen. It has been that way since new.

Thanks Matt for the reply. From that I am presuming either it is a software update, or the camera on the newer models is different to the earlier ones. As the car had new camera's fitted, due to failure of the old ones, it looks like we have a newer style camera?

If it is software then everyone else's older models should be seeing the same view, no-one on the forum (currently) has responded to say they have seen a change.

Your reply really helps, even though it probably is not what I want to hear Very Happy If this is the new view from the rear camera, it is really annoying when for 2 years the view has been without seeing the spare.

According to the guy at JLR who fits the cameras at the factory, he says he can’t see the problem… Whistle

Thanks Matt, that is how the camera view was on my car this is how it has looked for nearly 2 years and the loan Defender I currently has looks the same (the photo is actually from the loan car), however when the camera's were fixed the view changed to how yours is. So the questions remain, software or physical camera?

Is there anyone on the forum who has noticed a change in their camera view recently, with a 2020/2021 110 please? If it is a software update, am I right in my presumption that everyone's view should change for the pre 2023 models?
