BYD Chinese Defender copy
It was always going to happen I suppose but these guys are EV builders so they will beat LR to the scene with a BEV Defender!

over in China it means something we don't understand.

Remember Lucky Goldstar, re-branded to LG, because we Westerners don't understand that Lucky in a name, for them is good.

JLR won and was paid compensation in addition to the Landwind having to cease production of their X7.

I stand corrected, ma lord.

Although I am sure, initial ruling was in favour of LandWind.

"Jaguar Land Rover later went to court in China, but its complaints were dismissed in early 2015. At the 2015 edition of Auto Shanghai, Jaguar Land Rover's CEO Ralf Speth said he regretted "that all of a sudden, copy-paste is coming up again." He added that his company could not do anything, since there were no laws against copying cars."

I just hadn't seen the 2019 final update.

(as for LG, yes I know they are S Korean, I was generalising about far-eastern countries Very Happy )

I believe LR got an agreement with the Chinese Govt on the basis of them building an assembly
plant in China, the govt would “allegedly” stop the local market IP theft, copying and cloning LR
products.. as an ex Hong Kong expat I have a very cynical view of the Chinese govt and its
ability to stick to agreements yet another pommie bar steward down under

If it comes to dispute in tribunal I'm sure the judge will say, but look it's bigger than the Defender, has other lights forms and the fuel input or electric charger is on the other side, so NO resemblance.

Jokes aside I think LR has to really make the electric Defender (an all other electric cars) right from the beginning, as China has years long experience with E cars, though the last generations are as safe and as good or even better than EU brand makers. 22MY Defender 110 (actual) | 10MY Freelander 2 (history) | 15MY Discovery Sport HSE (history)

The profile is similar but everything else is different. lt doesn't have the barrel sides, the wheel arches are square, rear lights completely different, no alpine windows

They may get away with it.

Depends whether LR can trademark a silhouette. lt could be seen as "passing off".

Given Grenadiers success in that area, it seems unlikely. Darren
