Ulez expansion 2023 worries
Hi all as most of you are aware the London assembly voted the ulez expansion through to its next stage on Friday last week.

As most of you know I am just within the zone and starting to get a little concerned to say the least.

I’m at the point where I’m reluctantly considering selling my wagon, as I can’t really justify paying £12.50 just to drive it. To go see my mum it’s still cheaper than the two buses and two trains to go visit her and back and it’s still three times quicker.

I only really drive once or twice a week which would works out £1300 a year.

I know if I were to sell her I would instantly regret it, my father had been dangling Subaru WRXs in front of me which is tempting but dread the maintenance costs. But even if I were to sell at current market value (which I’m expecting will drop considerably with Ulez confirmation) I would still be short a large sum to get a euro 6 that meets my needs (which I’m expecting every second hand Euro 6 with hike massively due to increased demand).

Feels like I’m being forced to give up my hobby and that I’m being taxed because of the type of vehicle I need for work (4x4).

How does everyone else feel about this? I'm on IG: https://www.instagram.com/osloblue42/

Issue is - as soon as you get a Euro 6, that’ll be included before you know it. Goal posts are always moved.

It hasn’t taken long to start taxing electric cars.

Edit: for what you’d lose selling it, then paying out more for a newer car, then getting it to a standard your happy with - it’ll probably be cheaper to pay the charge and have a car you actually want. 2008 2.4 110 Utility Station Wagon XS.

Yes like congestion charge will apply to EVs too in 2025.

Like what’s the point of even trying to keep up with a moving target?

I get that it’s for environment and that they want to cut emissions but what’s the bloody point when people in Kensington and Chelsea can afford to page Ulez or buy a new car whilst I can’t.

According to the data the previous expansion into bother r& south circular has had little to no effect.

Sounds like it’s jobs for the boys with all these new departments. I'm on IG: https://www.instagram.com/osloblue42/

Unfortunately, just need to accept the rising cost of owning a vehicle.

It’s a bonus if you don’t have finance - as then it’s just the running cost to focus on. It gets expensive when you’re paying a congestion charge + finance etc.

Hold out another 20 years and you’ll be tax & mot exempt and I believe classic cars (will probably change) are exempt from ULEZ. 2008 2.4 110 Utility Station Wagon XS.

Even running a classic car is far from straight forward even if you do get free road tax and MOT exemption. First of all we had the problem of having to convert from leaded petrol to unleaded and now we have to venture miles to find a petrol station that sells ethanol free fuel and pay a 10 pence a litre surcharge.

Just announced road tax is coming for EVs as well didn't they? Sad They will get you one way or another.

Must admit I don't go into Birmingham anymore, even in a euro 5. Sad thing is I see there is technology available to bring things up to euro 6 standards but no mechanism to get it changed on the V5 so a pointless exercise.

Will you still be able to buy petrol and diesel in another 20 years?
By then the sale of new petrol and diesel cars will have been banned for 13 years. Sales of electric and PHEVs are fast approaching 50% of new car sales now. As fuel demand reduces, supply will start to dwindle, when retailers find it unprofitable.

Then there is the tax issue. Once electric cars are paying purchase tax, road tax, and tax on charging, how will the government encourage people to change to electric?
Probably by taxing petrol and diesel even more.

I live within the M25. I have a 2009 USW and a 1998 Ford Galaxy both in very good condition.
Sadly I will probably have to kill my Galaxy if the Ulez is extended to the M25
Makes no sense from an overall impact on the environment.

Unfortunately, for you at least, these sorts of zones are intended to address local air quality issues rather than the overall environment. Darren

So nothing to do with the fact that the 'Mayor' said at the beginning of the year that the original ULEZ zone didn't bring in the revenue that they were hoping for....

If everyone inside the M25 went EV tomorrow and any EV vehicle tax planned went to the Treasury, then London would introduce another form of charging people to move around.

Councils have become a law unto themselves.

I was just explaining the principle rather than the politics. LEZ's, anywhere, are a local measure rather than a wider environmental one. Darren

The fact the Mayor is discussing the revenue impact of the ULEZ and not the impact on local air quality I guess says it all.

It’s not so much that or local councils most of the outer councils in the expansion round have been surprisingly vocally against expansion.

The GLA/GLC however want a monopoly on all transport in and out of the capital. A toll either by train, tube, bus, cable car, monorail and car.

They’ll eventually start taking pedal bikes. I'm on IG: https://www.instagram.com/osloblue42/

A friend in London had the same issue and sold his rather smart 90 to Tim Elliott. He did the obvious thing and replaced it with a very smart mid 70s Rolls Royce, which is of course ULEZ compliant.

How about a nice v8 Disco or RR?
