Just getting my deck chair, bacon sandwich and mug of tea, will sit in front of the smug neighbours house just to watch the blood drain from his face as he opens the curtains……. Whistle

It was always going to happen. You can’t tell the public to replace one thing with another and not expect the government of the day NOT to allow a ‘what shall we tax today’ opportunity go to waste.

And with the weight of them the potential for road damage is greater. They don’t call my home town Land Rover country because everyone has one, noooo, it’s because you need one because the roads are so crap and falling apart.

Anyway, must go, the kettle is boiling…….. Rolling with laughter

Why is it going to drain? It will not be retrospective.

FT article mentions 2025/26 but who knows? However its has been talked about due to the rise in EVs , 2030 looming and how the government will "plug" the loss of VED / fuel revenue. (which stands at £35billion per annum)

Its been done numerous times in the recent years, reducing the grant to buy and less emphasis on emissions within the VED post the first year VED.

They will have to balance the books, the EV will create some form of nightmare for the treasury. Its nigh on impossible (at present) to add duty to domestic EV charging, esp if you have a solar set up to charge your car, I don't think even the tories would stoop to taxing sun light (for now)...

I suspect some form of monthly vehicle license being levied, if you take a modern ish Euro 4 car pre 2006 doing 12k a year (I will use my Mini as an example)

Tax = £220 a year / 18 a month.
Fuel Duty over 12k miles at £1.61 a litre (in my car thats about 24 tanks of fuel a year) = £996 in duty.

So an electric car owner might now be looking at at least something similar of £1216 a year of £101 per month to have an EV.

Sure is going to be difficult. I can see VED coming for EVs. But taxing electric soley for vehicles/ and monitoring it, will be difficult so you're left on pay per mile. But then you will need to apply to all.

Not a lot of options. Probably a tax on paid EV charging and the benefit that additional renewables bring will be offset by duty at source. Ie we will become use to high electric costs

EV owners are already taxed on their cars - you charge at a public/ commercial charger and pay 20% VAT on your charge cost, if you charge at home without solar panels then you pay 5% VAT on the electricity. The more electricity you use the more VAT you pay. Pangea Green D250 90 HSE with Air Suspension, Off-road Pack, Towing Pack, Black Contrast roof , rear recovery eyes, Front bash plate, Classic flaps all round, extended wheel arch kit and a few bits from PowerfulUK Expel Clear Gloss PPF to come

Well not exactly a surprise is it. They have to raise a certain amount, as the number of low emission cars go up and the number of high emission decreases the only way to keep raising that money is to start taxing cars you previously didn’t tax🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️

I have little doubt that the future will be road pricing and paying by the mile, probably on top of some form of non-usage-dependent punishment tax.

I am so glad that I am not of the next generation! Laughing
