I have a D250. No roof rack, ladder or lunchbox, but with all terrain tyres.

In London traffic, start stop 20-30mph, I average around 22mpg.

I did two 115 mile trips yesterday - about 9 miles in traffic (est 22mpg) and 100 miles on the M1 avg 70mph (77 when I can, 60 with traffic calming). Combined total journeys were 35.1mpg and 35.9mpg

Currently over the short 900 mile lifetime of my defender, it's averaged 29-30mpg. (each trip short of long pulls it up or down a bit.

Over the course of 4 years and 50,000 miles in a bmw 430i (2 litre twin turbo petrol), I averaged 31.1mpg with a mix of london traffic and then longer jaunts at the weekends. Driven harder than I would the def.

So it appears the defender is a little bit worse than my petrol bimmer. With fuel prices being what they are now, I guess it's about 10-15% more expensive to fuel. (But 100% more fun to hop into each morning).

My fuel consumption got noticeably better from ~5k mile/8k km...
Can't say precisely how much, but I reckon 10-15%, pleasantly surprised.
I find once you start revving it beyond 1,750rpm in my D300 the fuel economy dives. 22MY Defender 110 D300 S in Pangea Green and Contrast White Roof

Hi Alan,

I've actually managed an 80km stretch at 43.5 MPG (converted from L/100km) doing around 55 mph. That was while hiding behind a lorry though.
On average my D300 does around 27-28 on highways (going around 90 mph here in Belgium) and 22 in the city. Average total so far (10.000km) is around 25.

I have a ton of accessoiries but none that hamper the aerodynamics like the raised air intake, roof rack or sidebox. I think that makes the difference.

United Kingdom 2015 Defender 110 Puma 2.2 XS CSW Aintree Green
Going back to the original post and noting the massive differences in the vehicles being compared (size, weight and engine), a more subjective comparison is needed.
The fairest way would be to factor in the weight. We all know a lighter vehicle gets better fuel consumption.

BMW X3, 1750kg, achieved 44mpg.
1.75 Tonnes x 44 mpg = 77.0 TonnesMPG

Defender, 2300kg, achieved 33mpg.
2.30 Tonnes x 33 mpg = 75.9 TonnesMPG

Using this method the results are remarkably similar. Considering the the Defender also has the disadvantages of Barbie's lunchbox, a roofrack, a ladder, it's bigger and has wider tyres, the Defender appears to be doing better than the BMW did.
