My fuel consumption got noticeably better from ~5k mile/8k km...
Can't say precisely how much, but I reckon 10-15%, pleasantly surprised. I find once you start revving it beyond 1,750rpm in my D300 the fuel economy dives. 22MY Defender 110 D300 S in Pangea Green and Contrast White Roof IG defender_japan "Hulk san" |

Hi Alan,
I've actually managed an 80km stretch at 43.5 MPG (converted from L/100km) doing around 55 mph. That was while hiding behind a lorry though. On average my D300 does around 27-28 on highways (going around 90 mph here in Belgium) and 22 in the city. Average total so far (10.000km) is around 25. I have a ton of accessoiries but none that hamper the aerodynamics like the raised air intake, roof rack or sidebox. I think that makes the difference. |

Going back to the original post and noting the massive differences in the vehicles being compared (size, weight and engine), a more subjective comparison is needed.
The fairest way would be to factor in the weight. We all know a lighter vehicle gets better fuel consumption. BMW X3, 1750kg, achieved 44mpg. 1.75 Tonnes x 44 mpg = 77.0 TonnesMPG Defender, 2300kg, achieved 33mpg. 2.30 Tonnes x 33 mpg = 75.9 TonnesMPG Using this method the results are remarkably similar. Considering the the Defender also has the disadvantages of Barbie's lunchbox, a roofrack, a ladder, it's bigger and has wider tyres, the Defender appears to be doing better than the BMW did. |
