United Kingdom 2014 Defender 110 Puma 2.2 XS CSW Santorini Black
Engine light, limp mode
Hi All,

Just experienced an increasing hissing sound when accelerating over 1500 rpm. Next thing my engine light comes on then it went into limp mode. My engine is a 2.2 puma. After a slow drive home (20 mph up a steep hill!!!), I got the bonnet open to take a look. Not being a mechanic it’s always a challenge but owning a Defender you have to get your hands dirty right!

Spotted that the intercooler hose jubilee clip didn’t look right (had spun around and couldn’t see the screw). Took off the huge plastic fan cover to get a slightly better view. Felt that the hose was loose so refitted and tightened the clip.

Started the engine and the engine light stayed on. Turned off and alarmed, tried again a few times but light stayed on. Took a test drive and hey presto, no hissing and no limp mode, acceleration was back. Got home and popped the fan cover back on. Tried starting again and engine light didn’t come back!

Just thought I’d share for all the other non-mechanics out there. Thumbs Up

Cheers
Chris

So an explanation of what happened.

So a Diagnostic trouble code, probably one associated with the MAF sensor, would have triggered the limp mode and the check engine light to illuminate as your intercooler hose was loose.

These type of DTC’s are being constantly monitored, so as you rectified the loose pipe, restarted the engine and drove the vehicle a while the monitoring showed the issue was no longer their and the engine ECU cleared the DTC , the check engine light extinguished and limp mode was not triggered again.
Within you ECU the DTC will likely be stored as an historic DTC.
