TDI 300 Defender alternator bearing failure again
My 1996 Defender 110 TDI 300 in Australia has had three alternator failures .
In all cases the front bearing has failed and I was in remote areas.

What is the cause of the failure? Is the bearing getting too hot and if so, why?

Carrying a complete alternator as a spare is now the norm for outback traveling!

Maybe wrong belt fitted over tensioning and overloading the bearing, there are two alternator pulley sizes used on 300TDI and therefore two belt sizes. Using the shorter belt with the big pulley means the tensioner is under full spring tension

Could just be duff alternators?

It is easy to replace the front bearing yourself and the rear cup/needle bearing can also be found if you are lucky. I have a set sat in the drawer just in case.

Did have a couple of bad ones from Paddocks a few years ago. I think I bought the Lucas ones and two failed in quick succession. First one failed electrically then the replacement lasted until just outside the warranty before the bearings died. Paddocks agreed to replace it and I swapped manufacturer (Densa I think 🤔). Same alternator but this one has now done a few years with no issues.

If you are killing them regularly then maybe try a different manufacturer. I wouldn't expect dust to affect the bearings as they do have seals, but mud and water might shorten the lifespan.

I had three alternators within the space of a year on a 200 tdi. The problem turned out to be the wiring FROM the alternator. 1982 88" 2.25 diesel
1992 110 200tdi csw -Zikali
2008 110 2.4 tdci csw-Zulu
2011 110 2.4 tdci csw-Masai
