Very much depends on what the material used to manufactuer is:
If it's Aluminium. Wash with water and strong detergent mix, use a scrb brish to remove all muck, and water soluable comtamination. Rinse / wash very well to remove the above detergent and contamination Scotchbright pads to scrub and key the surface. Wipe with brake cleaner or other volatile solvent to remove grease and sanding debris. Surface must be keyed, clean and grease free for the following step. Etch prime. (may be 2 coats?) Base coat / under coat (colour matched maybe?) Top colour coat (2 coats) Laquer / Clear coat if needed/wanted If galvanised steel, then I believe Wash, rinse, scotch bright, solvent wipe then use a Mordant step to prep the zinc galvanise coating before If it's bare steel (un-galvanised) then just a normal non-etch primer will do. You still need to do the surface prep to ensure best adhesion of the paint to the metal. May need to carefully / gentle rub down between coats for best finish I'm assuming your going to spray the paint, if brush or roller then still same just one coat of etch is needed. Any hard corners or sharp edges can be curved/chamfer/smoothed and should be given a extra layer of primer, base and top coat to prevent "grinning" where the paint thickness is thin due to the harsh edge, it's where corrosion or damage will show first.
