You'll have to do it as tad MIL is an MOT failiure.
It's not too bad but time consuming and a pain in the ass. You'll need a torque wrench for the torque settings and the manual / sheet with the details on. Yes, some don't tighten to the torque setting but if you snap a bolt due to over tightening it will be a major pain. 3x bolts accessable from above. 1x best from below but not easy if your very short in the arm Last edited by custom90 on 12th Oct 2015 6:45pm. Having done several EGRs on Defenders, and Transits, I find it much easier to remove the inlet manifold to do the job.
The extra half hour it puts on the job makes up for the time spent trying to get at everything! Especially with the 8mm bolts that have a nasty habit of snapping. I done one last week and knew it was going to break, so I took the whole lot out in one. 80" 80" 86" 88" 90" Wanted, Forward Control Anything considered. |

Ok, got all three - a torque wrench, the workshop manual, and a rather long arm. I also presume that even the mechanical inadept will be able to fit and remove four bolts.
So I assume it's that lower bolt that makes it difficult? Would you clean the EGR valve or not bother and fit a new one? |

Last picture is the open manifold? ian, by any chance, would you know the part number of the EGR valve in a Puma? I presume it's this part here: http://www.ebay.com/itm/LAND-ROVER-DEFENDE...0583478894 Reasonably priced, actually... |

Couldn't tell you the number off the top of my head? Yes, the last picture is with inlet manifold removed, ( makes removal and fitting much easier) they are only held on with 8x 10mm nuts. New inlet gaskets from Ford are about £16 for 8. You CAN NOT buy the round gasket on its own, this has to be brought with a manifold, so save it if your going to take it off. 80" 80" 86" 88" 90" Wanted, Forward Control Anything considered. |

Perfect! I think I'll do the manifold as well and give it a good clean...
And pray I get it all back together. I work in documentary films, so documenting what I take off where should come quite natural |

You will be amazed at the crud you will get out of the manifold!
It's a dirty job, but worth doing. Just to let you know, the photos are of a Transit set up, but almost identical to a Defender, also I took out the pipe work with the EGR. You probably won't need to do that? I had to, as the bolt was going to break, so I had to heat it up with the gas. It'll be a bit of a dare, but I can see the EGR valve when I open the bonnet and I understand what goes where. I got all the tools and the documentation.
So I'll do my best snake person impression and undo the bolts, clean the manifold, put everything back in - and if I can't get it back together, I got a very skilled neighbour (who built his own BMW E34 from parts) who's gonna get me out of trouble |

Thought those photos looked different, EGR is much the same but pipe work not so. Makes sense you mention it's a Transit.
Yes, I agree change over don't fiddle - not worth it. Purchasing wise I'd 'PM' Dan @ Duckworth parts here and ask for a prices. Probably likely the best out there. I changed mine in the past but it wasn't a year and a half before the new one played up just before MOT time! Given the price and the pain in changing over yourself or paying for someone to do it the cost mounts up. Even if you do it yourself. In the long run I'd recommend getting a remap with EGR shut. A couple of EGR's and you are nearly up to the cost of a remap and remaps have other benefits on top too. Alice stage 1 for me. After that, slip a blank in and no more issues permanently. Sorry if this is an idiot's question - it probably is, but bear with me. This is what my replacement part looks like, Part No. LR006650. It's brand new, was a donation...
