Cut out- camshaft sensor? Timing chain?
Absolute nightmare weekend with a trip camping in wales brought to a halt half way there and hoping some guidance and reassurance will follow.

Briefly,2011 2.4 with 60k miles. Never any previous faults and running fine, stopped to top up fuel (was half full). 2 miles later and merging on to the M54 in 4th gear and car cuts out. No warning lights, no stuttering etc just engine dies.

Finally recovered home and has logged a camshaft fault P0340. What worries me is when looking thru the oil fill cap, there is no movement from the camshaft when turning over? Or should there not be with the fault code displayed?

Also does not appear to be feeding fuel thru the pump?

I’m trying to get the car to IRB Developments (once I get hold of them) to help to resolve. Any advice in the mean time?

Immobiliser appears to be functioning fine etc and do not suspect that. Originally I was thinking it could be a relatively cheap fix but the more I think, the more it could be an expensive timing chain issue. Which would be frustrating with the little miles and easy life it’s had.

If the engine is cranking but the camshaft is clearly not moving then there can be little doubt that the timing chain has failed (or possibly the camshaft has sheared).

at least if it is the cam chain they dont bend all the valves and damage the pistons, so hopefully just a chain kit will fix it DEFENDER 90 TDCI XS,

I hope everyone is well and your land rovers make you happy

From this you will see the 2.4 is classed as a non interference engine, so that’s a positive, also it’s believed a seized oil pump can cause the timing chain to snap. See page 2.

So sorry to hear you have had this issue at 60k, which seams very early, but there is some solace in it being a non interference engine.
