Hi gus, looking for some advice.
I have a 2004 TD5 Defender 90 that I owned whilst living in Italy. When the spicy cough took over I decided to return back to my home country Australia. I had no idea how long until I could return to it. Long story short it has been sitting there with the battery disconnected and very low fuel for almost two years. I am returning to Italy this week and hope to drive her. My question is, what if any problems will I encounter after having left it sitting for so long? Also are there any steps I need to take before I start it for the first time? Thanks in advance! |

Expect a long list of: tyres will have flat spots, change fluids, drain and refill fuel tank before bio contamination reduces all components to mush etc.
It's a Defender! Check tyre pressures, fill tank with fresh diesel, charge battery, start it up and drive away! I didn't touch my Morgan (NOT the most reliable of vehicles) for 18 months during COVID, took the dust covers off and it started at first spin of the starter. BUT, in anticipation I'd fitted a battery disconnect switch so there was no drain through alarm, clock, radio etc. (quicker than removing the battery, on my 4-seater one has to jack up the rear, crawl under the car, and disconnect and unfasten the battery to manoeuvre it over the back axle). If power in the battery run pump prime after checking engine like level. Then turn the key drive it to a fuel station and fill it with good quality fuel. Then give it an oil change and a set of filters when you get a moment.

pop some injector cleaner / diesel max into tank and top up to full.
change fuel filter and cycle purge a couple of times, then run to temp and blast on motorway, should be all good. expect bushes to request they arre worn out after a month or so of running, if the they have sat for a bit, |

Not sure on the OPs outcome but for others interested I would unplug the crash switch on the bulkhead and turn it over a few times to get the oil round without it firing
