Change of vehicle charge?
Hi all

I just phoned A Plan to change vehicles on my existing policy. I had a Defender 90 300Tdi that I have now sold and will be picking up a Defender 90 TD5 tomorrow.

Both cars similar value and the same drivers on the policy. The cost to change was £8, however there was a £50 admin charge!

When I mentioned that I wasn’t very happy with the admin charge the chap I was speaking with dropped it to £40.

I don’t mind paying for a service but £40 to electronically change the details on an existing insurance policy? Come on!

I know what you mean. Some time back I managed to get DVLA to reissue the original registration number for my 1961 mobile crane to replace the Q-plate it had gained. I was charged a £50 fee to update the policy details. The policy, which I'd only taken out about 6 weeks earlier, had at that time an annual premium of £35.

”Not happy" doesn't begin to describe my mood!

It wasn't A-Plan, by the way, I should make that clear.

I used to work on the commercial side for a large insurance company.

The charge is Censored as everything is done on the computer and in the majority of cases these days the paperwork is emailed.

The time spend by the handler is minimal and if anything the 'time waiting' for the computer to come up with the answer (its instant) is normally used to ask for additional business.

Its not like yee olde days when i started at a brokers that were still using dictaphones and a typing pool!

The other money spinner in my day was Legal Expenses, a £9 policy sold for £50.

It’s appalling isn’t it? Especially from a site sponsor…

Apologies as I've just seen this

Our fees are outlined in our terms of business and are less than most competing brokers, I know many of whom charge £75 for a small change - we do keep our charges lower to compete and offer a fairer service. Brokerage fees are not covering just the change itself but cover the service offered as whole, call answering, claims processing etc.
Our fees are £40 for new business and renewal, £30 for a midterm adjustment.

Just a quick clarification that it is not "the 'time waiting' for the computer to come up with the answer (its instant)" as most of you are on policies which are specialist for modified, off road use etc and not an auto-generated but manually calculated and amended.

As always, if you do have any concerns you are welcome to message me directly on here with your details so that I can locate your file and look into,
