I run a double camera system on my dcpu. Double lens camera mounted up on the rear of the rack with one camera looking backwards and a wide angle one looking down.
I replaced the rear view mirror with an LCD screen which shows the normal rear view camera all the time. The screen then has a reverse trigger which switches to the downwards facing one in reverse for seeing the towbar and backing upto stuff. My HU will support two cameras and allow me to switch between them, but I had the RF camera before I bought the HU and the RF camera has to use its own screen. The upside is that both screens can display their own images simultaneously, if I used the HU for both it would only be one at a time.
Rallysteve, I presume that it is an optical illusion/perspective effect that makes your screen look so large - it doesn't look as though you could see out past that! I remembered posting this picture below in some other thread, showing my setup. None of these screens encroach into the swept area at all so are all 100% legal. The forward-facing dashcam technically does and therefore technically is illegal, but it would be entirely hidden by the standard rear view mirror if it was still fitted and the mirror as a factory fit is not illegal. It would be a perverse enforcement office to make an issue of this! Click image to enlarge |

Indeed, the picture makes it look ridiculous. It is a fairly standard 7" screen and takes up hardly any more room than the original rear view mirror. From memory it doesnt really interfere with the sun visors but at 6'6" I cant use those anyway!
I dont find it obscures my view at all and I probably only usefully can use the top 1/3 of the screen anyway. Although it has night vision i did used to turn it off on mostly in the dark as the constant swapping from colour to black and white night vision with some bright lights does get annoying. Also, as with most camera systems some stupid new LED headlights appear to strobe on the screen. Its been through a couple of MOTs with it fitted and other than the tester commenting on what a decent solution it was has not been an issue. It is probably on the wrong side of legal strictly speaking as it probably infringes slightly on the wiper swept area but not that has caused an issue. Certainly no worse than some dashcams/phone holders/sat navs i see! Steve 02' 110 TD5 Double Cab Rebuild Thread |
