Anyone fitted the Mud Roof console?
How do you find it?

Any issues with head room?

I need space for more switches, and like the idea of a small bit of additional storage up in the roof.

Watching with interest…. Don’t need button space but like the idea of extra space, poss somewhere to stash a CB radio, but don’t want it to feel cramped / less airy… never been in a defender with one fitted

Yes, had one for years. It's very unobtrusive and does what I want, although I have modified mine somewhat.

Any chance you could post a couple of pictures?

I guess it's the possibility of feeling cramped that bothers me (not that I'm tall, but I already have posture issues from driving it!)

How have you modified it? for fit/to solve a problem or personal need?

I'll try to take and upload some pics tomorrow. Re the mods, initially I fitted it exactly as instructed in the Mud blurb, but after some years, when I needed to remove and refit some bits of it in order to install some wiring above it I deleted the support brackets that are inconveniently fitted more or less in the middle of the two main openings (I really don't see why they are needed, it is plenty strong enough without them and they really do get in the way) and also replaced almost all of the fir tree clips with screws and threaded inserts. This has made the whole assembly more secure, and also, paradoxically, easier to remove if necessary.

I have a row of auxiliary switches (for worklights, strobes and beacons) mounted in the "radio panel" of the console, and a wireless receiver for the winch mounted behind the switches. It's a tight fit but works rather well.

Overall it has been very useful, fits well, is well made, and I like it a lot. I'd buy another like a shot if I ever bought another Defender.

I have one in my 110 and find it quite useful. CB is mounted in mine. The extra storage is handy but there is not much of it. An incidental bonus for me (not being tall) is that it brings the sun visors down an inch or so.
I have just lent it to my Brother for the summer so can't get any pics, sorry.

It's a surprisingly tricky thing to photograph!

I'm about 5'10" and in my usual driving position can see the edge of the solid black strip across the top of my heated screen with the Mud console in place. Unless you are significantly taller I can't see that it would be obstructive.

Except from the one which obviously wasn't, these pictures were taken from the second row in order to get a wide enough view to be useful, and this clearly reduces the field of view through the windscreen due to the extra distance from the 'screen. I've tried to take the photos from the approximate level of my eyes when seated.

Hope this helps.

I have one in my DCPU and i am 6'6" and it causes me not issues or obstruction (i cant use the sun visors in the standard setup anyway). I only have the standard seats in mine.
A friend has them in his 110 3dr with aftermarket seats and i do occasionally bash my head on it when leaning forwards to pull out of junctions.

Thanks for sharing these. I've been on the fence on this for quite a while now, now I'm really considering it. Will most likely install as you have. Maybe I can hang a few nick knacks from it as well like a GPS or something. Planning to put a 2 way radio in the center bin. The shelves could be for docs and other important stuff I don't want sitting low in the event of another cabin water ingress. Mr. Green Thumbs Up

Thank you all, a big box arrived from Mud today, and will be fitting in a week or so once I've finished sound proofing and re-doing my headlining. Photos were very useful, I was under the impression it came down a lot lower than it does.

The only downside i have found if anything gets pushed to the back near the screen, there isn't a lot of room to retrieve it and I've got small hands, part from that it's great extra storage.

^^^ That is actually one of the reasons why I removed the front intermediate support pieces from mine (if you look closely at the photos I posted you can see the fir tree clips which plug the holes where they used to be). Doing this hasn't weakened the console significantly but means that you can now fit something like a road atlas up there, and it makes fishing smaller items out from the furthest recesses much easier.
