What you have is normal for a TD5/TDCi 110 vehicle, they were only fitted with the coil springs around the retaining pins. They rattle and tend to squeal, there are several or many threads on here on the subject.
Many people fit additional springs to address the rattle. I have found that most aftermarket pads squeal but genuine pads tend not to, other people have had different experiences. |

Thanks blackwolf.
Yes, I'd found a fair few threads on the squealing, but couldn't work out if I was missing some parts. When you say people add additional Springs, do you mean the extra ones I've suggested, or double up on the standard tube like springs I've already got fitted? Interesting point on the genuine pads... I've gone for ferodo as I thought they were the LR supplier.. but perhaps that's wrong. Thanks Jon |

Double up on the existing springs that have the pins going through them.

Great, thanks.
Handily, I have a spare set of the springs as I ordered a fitting kit without realising the pad set included them too. I'll pop out and fit them this evening. I've got a long drive tomorrow and the noise is driving me mad! So am I misreading the parts listing about LR070898 then? Are they worth getting as well? Has anyone tried/retrofitted them? Cheers Jon |

Well I've just doubled up the springs. Will test in the morning.
Thanks for the link Dinnu, I'll give that a try if they are still noisy. |

An update on this.
So the LADA/Fiat springs are pretty much unavailable in the UK. Eurocarparts, local parts motorfactors and a few other places were all unable to get them. No UK listings on ebay either. There are some on ebay from Lithuania, but at nearly £30 delivered, I opted to spend a couple more pounds and pick up a set of the genuine LR ones. So now have these fitted, and....... they still squeal, possibly louder than ever. I was about to order some genuine pads to see if that'd fix it, but I found someone local with a set of Delphi ones (who I now believe are the OE supplier) at an very good price. So I thought I'd give those a try first. If they don't work, then I'll order some genuine ones. I've also ordered in some of the Wurth spray that Dinnu suggested. Years ago I had a friend in the motor trade who used to rave about how good that product was, so I thought it worth trying. I'll report back once the Delphi are fitted (with the spray). |

The springs are to prevent the irritating rattle, not the irritating squeal.
Some pads require anti-squeal shims between the pad and the piston, some pads have these bonded to the back of the pads. I presume that you have these? The purpose of these is to reduce the contact force of the leading edge of the pad on the disc, since this is where the resonance that causes the squeal originates. |

I always put a smear of copperslip on the back of the pad before fitting to eliminate screeching pads. Never failed yet.
You can also try it on the friction side of the pad if it doesn't work, but at you own risk 😉 Mo The Land Rover 90 - Many are called, few are chosen. 50 Shades of Pennine Grey |

Yes, I'm aware the clips are only really to stop the rattle, but I was optimistically hoping (seeing as I'd tried everything else with this set of pads) that it may have helped. I've tried ceratec grease as well as the usual copperslip.
As for shims, the Ferodo pads have a rubberised pad bonded to the back of the pad, but no shims. I've just opened up the Delphi Pads, and they too have a rubberised bad and also some metal shims. unlike the Ferodo ones, the Delphi rubberised pads are not central. The metal shims are also asymmetrical as they have a hole stamped in them towards one side. I expect that they should be assembled so that the rubberised pad and the 'window' align, and fitted so that this is the leading edge of the pads. Like this. Click image to enlarge I'm hoping to get a chance to fit them this evening. in case it's useful to anyone at a later stage: I can confirm that the Ferodo pads come with a fitting kit (pins, springs and split pins) included, and the Delphi ones don't. |

The bit with no pad and the window in the shim should align, and should be fitted so that they are on the leading edge of the pad (i.e., the side which the disk enters the caliper when running forwards). In other words the opposite way to your photo!
The effect, as noted above, is to lessen the pressure on the leading edge of the pads. Copper grease is a good idea as well since it too tends to damp the high-frequency resonant vibration which causes the squeal. I always keep any old anti-squeal shims which are in good condition when I put new pads in, and before now have resorted to doubling them up to stop squealing. |

Thanks for the quick response, I'll fit them as you describe.
I must admit I'm still a bit surprised about the whole thing. I consider myself a reasonably competent home mechanic and I must have fitted dozens of sets of disc/pad over the years on various cars of mine, family and friends, but this has been the most troublesome set by a county mile! |
