Thanks! Left it in the rain and not a single leak so I’m taking that as a big win.

No visible leak just means it was able to drain out below the doors!

Small but satisfying update today, fitted the parts I forgot to order when I fitted the SW back and door: a striker and new safari door seal.

No more holding the door shut with string (which gets boring remarkably quickly).

Note on the Brit part door striker for anyone in the same position in future - you’ll need to slice about 4mm off that rubber at the top otherwise the latch won’t fit into the striker (the one I had wouldn’t anyway).

Next stage is to think about sound deadening and final finish in the rear as it’s like an echo-chamber now

General consensus seems to be skins/dynamat 2mm with partial coverage to prevent vibration. Then full coverage thick (8mm?) closed cell foam. Finally, a thick final layer - this would be a headliner and rubber liner/carpet in the back.

I’m all ears if anyone has any feedback or recommendations on that.

Thanks
Dave

Another small but satisfying job done.

At the camp my mate very helpfully “showed me” the window would open. Don’t think it had been open in years and subsequently developed a rattle.

Job 120 became job priority 1: fitting new catches

Window no longer rattles, is now more secure and I even cleaned off the last of the residue from the tints that were on there. Such an easy job that I should have done sooner.

Actually did the Lanoguard today, not a glamorous job and I’m at least 10% sheep now! Very easy to use, hoping it cures nicely.

No photos as it’s very hard to see, it just looks wet. That would be my one tip for anyone doing it in future, have a bright light to hand to see where you’ve done and work methodically following the guide on here.

The crevice/360 spray head is an absolute must to get into the tub straps, chassis cavity, etc.

Also don’t eat it or get a massive drop in your ear - it’s unpleasant.

For the sound deadening I used Dodo Mat under the bonnet. Made a big difference to the engine noise. For the rear floor and sides I used Wrights Off Road matting. This really reduced transmission whine and tyre roar.

I prefer the Wrights matting as it's easy to wash out after two muddy Labradors have been transported.

Thanks Steve, already bought the pre-cut dodomat for the bonnet as I figured that was an easy win whilst I was in the landyshop grabbing some other bits (the actual shop for LRParts.net is nearby) so good to know that’s effective. Thinking about sticking a hood liner over the top too.

I’ll have a look at the matting thanks, trying to find a balance between thickness and it working and being able to fit carpet/matting over the top and it looking daft. Definitely need to reduce the transmission whine, it’s almost all motorway miles so far to get out the city into Wales.

Nothing exciting but a step forward for my defender nevertheless, finally got off my bum and started adding sound deadening tonight. Took my time to get a nice fit on it all, it was much fiddler than expected.

Step one was to clean the surface for good adhesion. Little before and after below - I think this is overspray from when the exterior of the roof was painted black, and was an absolute pain to remove. Ended up wet sanding and polishing it.

Before:

I used Dodo Deadn (silver stuff) for the resonance deadening - ran my fingers all over the edges to flatten them down multiple times.... looked down a a couple of minutes later to see blood absolutely everywhere on my hands. Hadn’t realised it’s an actual metal foil with a very sharp edge - I’d done some extreme “paper cuts” all over my fingers. I managed to keep it off the car thankfully but wasn’t;t pleasant.

Top tip: wear gloves!

Then applied Dodo super liner. This was super lightweight and easy to use compared to the deadn. Does tear easily so have a fresh Stanley blade ready.

Think I managed to do a tidy job:

Rear will be done tomorrow before I fit my new headlining, then I can start thinking about the tub. Front has already been done by the previous owner with some heavy matting on top but I’ll look to redo/add to this at some point.

Just incase this is useful, Home bargains sell cut resistant gloves for £2.50 per pair. They are my go-to gloves when working on the truck as they tend not to wear through on the tips.

Another top tip is to use a wallpaper seam roller:

Dave when you are done with all this spit and polish lark you'll have to come back down. It has been raining for at least a week now so those lanes will be...

Believe me guy I can’t wait to get out again

Last four weekends have been:

Wedding
Stag
Visitors
Wedding!

Can’t wait to have a chilled weekend out in the hills again, whether it’s in the Landy or on foot.

November is more free if you fancy a trip out then

Thanks for the tips guys, I found some gloves and used a rolling pin in the end

ETA: thanks Leamreject

Also can’t believe the difference this morning, even without the headlining the sound is now all “behind” me. Can hear the exhaust rather than just noise.
