Naka rear door strut AND a swingaway carrier?
Hi folks.

The back door on my puma has always wanted to flop closed and won't reliably stay open.

I'm planning on fitting a table to the door for a cooker and I also have a Mantec Wheel carrier ready to fit - so planning on doing both jobs at the same time.

I have also been planning on fitting a Nakatanenga gas door strut too.

But it dawns on me that the piston in the swingaway carrier and the Nakatanenga door strut might be OTT.

Could anyone advise?

I’ve got this exact set up one my 110. I think I have version 2 of the door strut, the one that is positioned at the bottom of the door in the same position as the original. Works well to keep the door open and is easy to open. Closing the last bit can be a bit stiff but I find it a good upgrade overall compared to the original.

I've got the v2 ram fitted at the bottom of the door, plus a Britpart wheel carrier and it works well Thumbs Up It can be a little stiff to close but that's probably my fault for not oiling the moving parts of the wheel carrier as regularly as they should be. 2005 Td5 110 Hardtop

As above: V2 lower strut with wheel carrier. Easy to open. Holds open even on a slope. Heavier to close than standard.

Personally i prefer this than the closes on you on any slope with the weight of the spare wheel on the door.

If it were me, I'd fit the wheel carrier first and see how it is. You my find that it provides enough resistance on its own. I've got a Britpart carrier on mine, which I'm very pleased with and don't feel the need for an additional door strut. Darren

Hi all!

Firstly I'm not a new member, have been since 2011 but somehow it all disappeared so had to re register!

My question is about the rear gas strut from Naka, wanted to fit one for 10 years but never got around to it. I finally bought the version 2 and fitted it yesterday. Now here's the problem! When I installed it, as per the data sheet pictures supplied I checked its function...... masterful! what an aid in every respect.
So, then I reinstalled the rear door trim and found that on closing the rear door the strut reaches an angle at about the mid closed position where it comes into contact with the internal rear door trim at the point where the relief for the factory stay molds back into the flat part of the trim panel. This results in the door trim being popped of of the door frame in that bottom corner, so strong enough to overcome the resistance of the door trim fixing clips.

Just wondered if anyone else has had similar issues. By the way I'm an ex engineer having spent quite some time in the automotive reearch and development side of things so I don't feel that I've installed it incorrectly. To me it looks like the internal tub mounting bracket supplied is fractionally to long and is creating too great an angle at that mid closure point.

It is an excellent investment, especially for LHD cars.
- No issues with the spare wheel
- No issues with the door card popping out. 110 HT TD5 w/ PopTop for travelling

The clash with the door card was a fairly common issue when that version was first released. I don't know if the design was updated to solve it but ISTR that the fix was to slightly deform the door car with a heat gun. Darren

FWIW I got rid of my Naka Strut (the version that mounted at the top of the door) after a few weeks of fitting a spare wheel carrier - I found it a struggle to push the door shut and I'm not a noodle-armed choirboy!
