Windscreen Frame -- material
What is the windscreen frame made of??????

Doesn't seem to take a magnet but it seems harder than aluminum.

The front hinges also don't take a magnet.........are they aluminum???

The frame seems to be made of aluminium but with a high metal content (if you know what I mean!) as it does rust and is harder as you say for ally!

Actually the 100 % correct answer would be No and No

Aluminium is a metallic element whereas these items will be made from aluminium alloy of which there are hundreds of different ones.

Pure aluminium is extremely expensensive and very soft! We used to cut the end of a 3mm pure aluminium bar with a steel razor blade. Less then 5 gm cost over a £100 errr a few years ago.

Ok pedantic hat away now Rolling with laughter

I think the 'hinge blocks' are cast alloy. How is the ali frame made? My guess is that it would be cast. Does anyone actually know the answer?

If you look at it "raw" - i.e. without the trims on - it's clear that it's a casting.  1988 90 Td5 NAS soft top

Having been in a 90 which had a 'gentle roll' the top of the windscreen frame just snapped which is typical of castings. Pressed/folded aluminium is more likely to show signs of stretching or bending before fracture.

I guessed that the windscreen frame was made by a casting process which other people seem to agree with.

Yep, definitely cast for sure, it's pretty soft and easy to drill. Steve.
