Hello folks.
My 2008 110 DC has some slight surface rust on the face of the crossmember so wanting to tidy it up. Thinking of a light sand back and spraying the whole thing with a rattle tin. What do you guys recommend? Cheers 👍🏻 |

If you prep it properly then just ordinary satin black. I did mine in this way a year ago and it still looks like new.

If you want cheap, Lidl are currently selling black at £4 for 400ml - I think this is meant to be zinc based but do check.
They are also selling off (if they still have it) matte black car paint at £3 per tin or £5 for 2 (these are not zinc). I managed to pick 6 tins up for £15 which I am using for colouring rather than protecting (its going over Bonda Rust Primer). Currently just applied to a rear axle case. I would describe it as more satin than matt. This will have an anti corrosion over it after fitting (one of the clear ones) so I wasn't too worried about protection qualities - though I am not saying it won't provide any protection! I used a POR-15 rattle can. Still looking great. Light rub down, then a good scrub with Fertan, then POR-15. Less than an hour's work last summer and still looking good after winter Defender "Puma" 2.4 110 County Utility (possibly the last of the 2.4's)

This shows great prep work by Darren. I believe painting is all about preparation, especially when trying to cover rust. I have tried Aquarust and have been very disappointed. You need rust for it to work, but too much rust and it doesn't. I have tried cleaning off the rust to use it, but then you can end up with patches with all the rust removed!! In most cases rust comes back through - or it has for me anyway. Good luck with the crossmember, I hope you can get it as good as Darren's! |
