Burning small when pushed hard
After a few recent journeys, either up a long steep hill or at 110-120kmh on the M-way for a prolonged period, there is a considerable and distinctive burning smell that gets into the cabin when I stop. On exiting, the smell ‘seems’ to be coming from the rear of the engine bay and not directly under the cabin/seat box, but obviously sniff tests like this are not exactly precise. The smell clears after a couple of minutes.

As many will know I had a clutch and OS change recently. I also wrapped one metre of my exhaust to reduce cabin heat. This has started since that was all done.

Do we think it is too much/little oil in the transfer case?
Too much/little oil in the gearbox?
Wrong oil in either of the above?
Wrapped exhaust?
Some wire or tube (turbo?) getting hot in the engine bay?

Long drive planned for this coming Thurs (10ths to Barcelona), keen to work out what’s going on before then.

if you used a reputable garage to do the mechanical work I would bet it relates to the exhaust wrap, will probably pass after use but definitely worth checking fluid levels DEFENDER 90 TDCI XS,

I hope everyone is well and your land rovers make you happy

Exhaust wrap can really stink for a few weeks until its been fully heat cycled. At least it did on the race cars, my cooper S had the manifold wrapped and it stank for a while.

Theres a reason we ceramic coat most things now.

Reputable garage was me, and um, a mate. But we were very diligent on measures for lubricants etc. Will double check levels. Monsieur Le Grenadier

Good to know. As mentioned above to LR90, will check fluid levels and hope that the burning smell weans itself off…. Monsieur Le Grenadier
