@j12engineering….. How did you fix the awning without roof bars? Also any feedback on the Drivelodge in bad weather, high winds and rain?

Thanks

Quite simple really - a little J12Engineering….

I had contacted a known roof rack manufacturer and asked them to make one without the centre bars. All agreed, but it didn’t materialise, sadly. Time was running out before departure, so I simply fabricate 3x P-brackets that matched to roof contour - the front one is smaller to accommodate the tapering roof.

The gutter mount is of standard style to most roof racks, albeit I need to reduce the tube diameter, hence the washer to stop the bolt canting over. Then 2xM8 bolts through the roof skin with a reinforcing spreader plate inside, and sealant under the bracket to ensure it’s water tight.

Modification #1 will be to square them off to remove the triangular top, but that element aided the original manufacture. And as mentioned above reduce the foot bolt tube diameter.

As for the Drivelodge poptop tent, it performed perfectly. We had one windy night and another where we were camping in the clouds, due to altitude, and a thunderstorm broke. That makes for a very loud night where you have no chance of sleeping, but the rain kept out of the tent.

Overall I’m very impressed with the Drivelodge roof, and it’s a great price. There are a few elements I am going to modify though, but more to come on that once done.

Thanks for that, a really neat solution. Good to hear of your experiences and looking forward to the modifications 👍.

A pop top is next on the list for my 110 and I’m quite liking the Drivelodge option at the moment. [/quote]

Really enjoyed reading this thread so far (not even halfway through!)
A quick question for you pop toppers... is there anything to stop some lunatic grabbing the outside and pulling it down whilst you're comfortably snoozing away? (other than the threat of a permanent Ctrl+alt+del once you escape?)

Extec have internal struts to avoid a collapse of the roof. I don't know if it's an issue in practice. To pull the roof down from the outside you'd have to climb up (to) the rear. It needs some force to pull it down from a fully open position (at least it should - depends on the weight you have on the roof and the force of the gas struts). I'd rather not sleep where such a situation could arise Cool

I fitted an airline rail to fit the awning and the shower. It’s from the end to the alpine windows. At the front it’s fitted to the rollcage.
The rail is supported by 5 mm alloy stripes inside the roof, six screws and glued as well. The hinges are homemade. So it’s easy to took the awning away in winter time.

Thumbs Up That looks a neat solution. How does the Poptop work inside with your roll cage, do you have the internal loop as well or is it just external?

I have only the front and the internal rollbar.

The internal one end with the hole in the roof.

Perfect 👍 thank you. There’s not many pop top options that allow some form of roll cage too.

X-Vison-X also has a roll cage that can be fitted with a pop top .... Thumbs Up

https://x-vision-x.com/en/products/uberrollbugel

and they also have awning brackets to mount with a pop top as well - I have these on my 110 and they are really robust.

Thanks Gary. Good to know, I had not seen this option before, options options options…. My comparison spreadsheets is getting longer by the day 🙄🤣.

For someone looking into this development for their defender, this thread is proving to be so helpful, thank you all 🙏.
