ABS Problems
Hi Everyone, I was hoping someone could help me with a problem that has had me and the mechanics tearing our hair out. I've looked extensively everywhere but can't find anyone who's had the same problem. It's on a 2009 2.4 110.

The problem is that when braking under normal conditions, the brake pedal is jumpy/crunching etc. exactly the same as when the ABS activates normally. This happens every time the brake pedal is pressed regardless of force, conditions etc. but not under 15mph. There are no lights illuminated on the dashboard throughout any of this.

This first started occurring after I rebuilt all 4 calipers with stainless pistons, fitted braided brake hoses, replaced the swivel seals and wheel bearings all in one go. I bled the system several times as I first suspected air in the system. I took it to my local (and highly recommended) LR specialist and they could not get to the bottom of it. They have checked all the ABS sensors for the correct reading and changed the modulator for a known working one with no change in symptoms. Between them and me we have been through most of the wiring involved in the system. All the bearings and ABS rings have been double checked and are fine.

Through my own trial and error I have found that disconnecting either of the left hand ABS sensors solves the problem but obviously illuminates the ABS and TC lights (disconnecting RH sensors illuminates lights with problem still occuring). The red brake warning light still illuminates for 'low' brake fluid level however not for the handbrake, despite the handbrake switch seemingly working fine. The handbrake light stopped working slowly at a different time after the other symptoms. One other thing to note is that once or twice under harsh acceleration the TC light comes on and causes the vehicle to pull to the right for about a second. I've checked every earth point I can find on the wiring diagram and they're all good.

Sorry for an essay but as you can see it's not a simple problem and seems to be electrical which is not my forte. Any help anyone could give will be hugely appreciated.

Thanks, Jacob

Hi Jacob,

obviously hard to diagnose the problem over the internet. But after reading your post, the first thing that came to my mind, is a somehow faulty ABS-sensor.
You said, the dealer has checked all the sensors for a correct reading. We'll that is where I would have another look first.
Absolutely vital to have an OBD Reader (lynx, nanocom, etc.) at hand to check the individual signals with the wheels actually turning. They obviously don't throw a fault code, so wiring should be okay. However they might simply send a signal to the ABS unit that the wheel is locked and the computer therefore relasing the brake on that wheel.

Hope that helps a bit...

Regards,
Phil

You wrote the car is pulling to one side shortly with TC activated. Does it also pull to one side when braking normally? Might give us an indication on which brake to have a look at...

Thanks for the replies. I appreciate its hard to work out the issue from a description. I was hoping someone would have had a similar problem with a 'this is how I solved it' kind of post.

The garage had it up on the ramps and span each wheel individually and checked the signals on lynx/nanocom (I was told) so I think that's covered.

It sometimes pulls to the left when braking but not consistently so it doesn't seem connected to the wider issue.

Is it possible to swap the sensors left to right and see if under hard acceleration still pulls to the right, or if it starts pulling to the left? Just a thought. 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing

Check, if the ABS sensors are seated properly. "Drobek" = The Small One - Discovery 2, "Blufínek" = The Blue Thing - Defender 130, and for me at least Ford Mondeo Smile

Hey Jacob,
any luck in finding what causes the problem?
