Cant Fill up
I have recently purchase a 1996 defender and have loads of fun in it so far.
Went to fill it up at the petrol station and it would only take a £1 worth of diesel.
This took a minute to drain down the filler pipe.
Any ideas?

That is very odd. Grab a torch and have a look down the filler nozzle. I wonder if someone is playing a practical joke on you and has stuffed a rag or something down the filler pipe. I hope not, but stranger things have happened.

1. check top pipe is not blocked or collapsed or kinked as this fuel tank fill vent

also with age these pipes will crack and can brake easy

2. Look under passenger side rear wheel arch for fuel tank vent and make shore it not blocked with mud this is tank vent with filler cap on

1996 possibly have the fuel tank under the driver seat, but should be same design as above, large flexible pipe for fill-up and a smaller one as breather.
Some (ex military?) had a filler extension with a mesh... never seen one in person though. Perhaps mesh is blocked. 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing
