MY 2015 auto box install USA
Hello guys and gals.
I would like some input on what I'am about to do here. I will be fitting a Ashcroft 4spd auto conversion in the next few weeks. Now, my defender 110 was sold new in Mexico and now it resides with me in the US. Not many around here that know much about this engine or a defender for that matter. So I will just do it myself. I plan on removing the body off the chassis for a number of reasons, to do the following.
1. Install the auto box
2. install silicon hoses
3. blank EGR and remove the DPF
4. install a larger intercooler
5. possibly larger breaking system

Is there anything that I'm missing here that i should do since i will have full access to the drivetrain. One thing i was wondering about is if they make any sort of ARP head studs? What can be done to "bullet proof" the engine? I would really appreciate all of your responses, thank you!

What year and engine do you have? Taking the body off is total overkill and unecessary for the conversion

I’d have thought the mt82 was more reliable than the thing it’s bolted too

Says 2015 and mentions a DPF, so that will be a 2015 2.2 TDCI.

On point 2 .
If doing the silicon hoses don’t forget the elbow one to the inlet manifold, a real awkward one to get to but one that does fail, two members had it fail this month.

On point 3. You will need a remap to delete the egr and DPF, worth contacting Bell auto services https://bellautoservices.co.uk/

They also have the intercooler and hoses for sale plus if you go for their remap you also get the IDtool as part of the remote map capability and it is an excellent diagnostic tool. Given there a few people in your area that know defenders I expect having the tool will prove highly beneficial.

Get the dpf out, get a catch can fitted. Amd keep am eye on the injectors, if it starts slight reving up higher than you have pushed the throttle pedal it's starting to over fuel you will eventually hole a piston

The entire LS thing is way overrated.
Ask yourself why hardly anyone put his Def on a dyno after the conversion and comes up with the real figures. Done my L98 (one of the first new crates available in the world at that time) in 2007/08 and dyno tuned it btw. m

silly question, is the 25 year import rule different when importing a car in from Mexico as oppose to the UK?

Cant say that i have ever thought about it before.

Don't forget that the MT82 has a poor reputation in the 'States where it is usually found in its Chinese form in the Mustang. There will be a tendency to tar the better Defender box with the same brush.

I think once the swap is done and the tuning is complete, it should perform just fine, gas is $5 a gallon now, i don't need or want a V8, if i want to go fast, I can drive something else

As I understand it the problem with the MT82 is not the place of manufacture but a design fault by Ford Getrag. It can’t handle fast gear changes at higher revs. You probably won’t notice it when pootling around in a Defender or Transit but it was a real problem for the Mustang. Blackwolf will know it’s technical deficiencies better than me but those with a Puma try a quick standing start and more often than not it will mess up changing into 3rd gear. An uprated clutch helps a bit but it still a POS by modern standards. I also read the MT82 is only designed to take a maximum of 370nm which is may account for so many Mustang failures in the US.
Ford’s budget parts-bin design attempt at the Defender was a complete disaster. Ditching the (excellent for the time) TD5 for a Transit engine that frequently blows up and can’t be reliably tuned more than 200bhp plus rubbish gearbox, not to mention that poxy output shaft. IMO the Td5 was a much better truck with the exception of the dashboard design. WARNING.
