On most occasions when you stop your engine you should immediately hear a chugging sound as the EGR goes through an opening and closing cycle to keep the mechanism clean. If you don’t hear this sound on a regular basis it indicates the EGR is not operating correctly and will likely soon fail.

On the 2.2 the EGR can not be deleted without a remap of the engine, I also believe it works in conjunction with the DPF and an EGR delete will also require a DPF removal, I’m pretty sure I’m correct in this but I’ sure other members can confirm.

An EGR delete or a DPF delete will result in an MOT failure. Currently a visual inspection is undertaken to see if an EGR and DPF are present but I expect other checks via the OBD2 port are on there way to validate they are present and working.

A new pierburg (OEM to ford and therefor LR) EGR can be had for circa £100. Very fiddly to fit as its tight spaces and hard to reach nuts , bolts , studs and pipe clips. When I did mine on the drive it took about five hours, I think I could do it in 2.5 hours a second time. An Indy should take circa 2 hrs.

So my advice is to look on your current valve, read the pierburg part number and source a new pierburg valve inc gaskets at the cheapest price you can, plus two new studs and nuts in case they get damaged on their removal. The bolts will unlikely be damaged on removal so should be ok to reuse but are cheap so you could get two of them as well. Have a chat with a few local independent Lr specialists to get the best price to fit. I would proactively fit now before any more issues arise and leave you stranded, especially if not hearing the chugger sound when stopping engine.
If doing yourself I can advise on the procedure but to be honest half way through the job i wished I had got an indi to do it at circa £150 labour cost. Noting I had to get a friend with smaller hands than I to get at one of the nuts and studs as my hand would not fit in the tight area.

Back from Holiday. Many hundreds of miles covered and no issues. 2 full tanks with that redex went through, so hopefully that has done some sort of cleaning.

At least the fix was removal of the fault code. One of the easier ones for the time being at least…

interesting. I always using 'ultimate' fuel, yes it's more expensive but I do believe its money well spent.
I don't suppose for a moment you use the same more expensive fuel do you?

Ianh- great and comprehensive advice. I may look at getting an Egr valve if it happens again. I also have very recently read the egr and Dpf are both necessary on a 2.2tdci.

Caterham- nope, I’m a cheapskate and use supermarket fuel.

I must say I've been finding this interesting as I have been doing too many short journeys recently (working from home). I've never added anything into the fuel and have been reading up on this. I don't use supermarket fuel but use "branded" fuel stations regular diesel. I've just ordered the following as a preventative maintenance measure:

Millers Oils Diesel Power Ecomax Fuel Additive Treatment
Millers Oils DPF Diesel Particulate Filter Cleaner and Regenerator
Millers Diesel Injector Cleaner

I do not currently have any problems in my 2.2. We'll see if I notice any improvement but at least using the ecomax additive on a regular basis should keep the the limp mode away Thumbs Up

Thanks for the recommendations,

Chris
