After brexit
So. Long story short.

Brought a new rear number plate light and camera from the uk.

When it arrived the light would not work.

Literally asked by supplier to do two tests to confirm bulb was bad. It failed them. So the same afternoon they sent out a replacement part that they checked and verified worked.

That was end of October and was sent 24/48 hour service with Royal Mail.

Now the interesting part.

Asked to provide an invoice for the part for correos (post office in Spain) explained that it was a replacement part they said ok, then changed mind and asked for invoice, the supplier obliged and sent an invoice for zero which was the cost to me.

Customs in Spain said not allowed. Many emails to abs fro, not possible to speak to a juman all through there portal, which is a pain as you can not upload more than one document at a time and they ask for 2-3.

Eventually got the invoice for it to be delivered here in Spain yesterday.

They calculated the light is worth €25 so 5€ of vat, then 20€ admin fee, €5 for something else then vat on top of that so close to €35 to get it imported into Spain.

I am still arguing about them saying it’s worth €25 as I can get one on eBay for £9 which I sent them the link.

Europe is defiantly profiting from brexit. I recon in Northern Ireland it will be very hard for them.

Just get a credit note for the original part from the supplier. Present both.
Sounds like a problem with Spanish admin

Well how about this then.
I recently purchased a new Td5 engine from Turners, I drove to UK to pick it up,as Turners wanted my old engine. As I was taking the new unit out of the UK,no VAT levied by Turners.
On my return through the Tunnel no Duanes,so not able to declare the engine.(Oh dear. Thumbs Up )
Once back home, taking the rocker cover off the new engine,I realised there is no injector shaft fitted & I had left my old one in my old engine.Contacted Turners,No problem,we will send it back to you.
Postage cost was 32€.I didn't have a problem with that. Then,DHL levied a fee of 36€ for tax & duty Shocked
1.It was my item.
2.No fee was paid to Turners for it.
3.It is a second hand part,so should not pay duty on it.
I needed it ASAP,so didn't quibble, and as I got away without paying VAT or duty on the engine. You win some, you lose some.
As a side note,Turners shipped the shaft at 16.00hrs Thurs,it arrived at my house in the South of France at 12.00hr Friday.Less than 24 hrs door to door. That is impressive.

Marc.

Defiantly an issue with the Spanish admin the issue I have is if I give them the original invoice and tell them this was one part on it they will prob still charge me again for the whole invoice. I don’t trust them at all. I’ll prob end up paying it but still querying it at present as don’t know how they decide the light unit is worth €25 and not £10 exchange rate they use is wierd Searching for my first Defender...and started just as Covid hit, so talk about timing.

It is not just the Spanish customs....

Forum member here Co1 offered to ship me for free an AC grille. Same, 0 value invoice was not accepted (I do it all the time for work for warranty claims by our customers).
So then they put a value, I paid vat on that value, and of course a service fee for charging me the vat 😭 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing

in think you've missed the mark. the second light did work so there should now be light at the end of the tunnel?

I flew to germany for work, left my boots at home so ordered a new pair from same UK supplier, they wanted 109 euro's in fees for a £160 pair of boots...

told them to send them back.

I have two large RC boats in Germany I would normally have them posted back (both are over 1.5m) but GLS stopped shipping into UK (it was great 40 Euro for anything I think 50kg and pretty much unlimited size)

I did plan to jump on the ferry drive down to get them before covid flared up, think it would be cheaper than paying customs fees (on my own boats) that originated in the UK. Shocked

And it works both ways too. I wanted a set of Fog DRL combo lights in 70mm from Germany (would have been the perfect solution) but the supplier went "NO" to dealing with British import paperwork/regulations.

Suggested I go to Alliexpress instead because that would be easier Rolling Eyes Rolling with laughter

See that’s the thing with voting to leave a free trade area, you no longer have free trade, who’d have thunk it.

Obviously mistakes are being made and that needs to get sorted, but it’s just a fact of post Brexit life that importing stuff either way over the channel will cost more
