I don't think the rev limit changes when in low box, it's just a "spongier" throttle pedal map to reduce jerkiness.

As above. In Low box you still have the full RPM range, just you go much slower. The ECU dampens the response to the effort your foot puts in to reduce any jerkiness and deliver smooth power to the drivetrain.
Have you folks played around with the anti-stall on your TD5s? it is amazing how far it will go in 1st Low diff locked at idle |

I've been told by a couple of people that the limit is lower in low range.
I just wondered if anyone had tested using nanocom or similar. I've had mine remapped and now have the clutch pedal sensor disconnected but the antistall was quite clever but I've never relied on it. Just an interest thing really as been playing with things just to see what it does. |

Well all I can say with absolute certainty is my TD5 will go all the way when in low range, in all gears and in overdrive too

Why on earth would you want to rev a TD5 to the limiter in low range?
Remind me never to buy a Defender you've previously owned!! |

Guess youve never driven in sand or extreme inclines
Rev limit is roughly 5k. Never hit the limit in 4th/5th high because thats madness. I have hit the limit 1st - 4th on low. Not that hard to do Anti stall is brilliant. 2nd low its greelane cruise control! Instagram @defender_ventures Empire Tuning - Agent |

Done it a couple of times dragging trailers through mud, changing gear would rob all the momentum...
Also, occasionally hitting the rev limiter on a well maintained engine will do zero harm in the long run |

l did think after posting the above, if you were using the Landy in competition you'd most likely be using all the RPM
l've never gone past 4,000 in mine, but in normal road use l guess you wouldn't need to. lt does go well 3,000-4,000 though. Seems to get smoother if anything |

While on the subject of rev limits - am I the only one here who finds it runs totally out of puff past 3000 rpm? I'm using the VDO td5 rev gauge, and at an indicated 2500rpm with the foot to the floor it starts smoking out the back, and its throwing clouds of black smoke out beyond 3000rpm, where it feels like acceleration has reduced anyway.
Its got an Alive remap on it, and after it was initially mapped the smoke was terrible so I visited them where they diagnosed 'low air flow', but we have no idea why. The MAF was changed twice, using genuine VDO units and the problem persisted. In the end Alive reduced the fueling higher in the rev gauge which totally resolved the smoke issue below 2500rpm - but I've never been able to 'rev it out' if the mood takes me, which to be frank it rarely does these days anyway. Two thoughts come to mind - the rev gauge isn't reading correctly - it reads about 2500rpm at a GPS 70mph in fifth gear with the 1.2 transfer box and 33" tyres on which sounds in the expected ballpark. The second is - do I have a blockage somewhere in the intake? Its running the standard air box and pipework to the wing, and has the bigger intercooler on it. I guess I could undo the cover on the air box and take it for a spin to see if it makes any difference. 2005 Td5 90 XS 1989 V8 110 CSW |

l have to say that, my Alive remap didn't work, the Defender smoked like a tramp steamer under power and l had to have it reset by Land Rover.
l've now got an "economy" remap done by a local LR guy which is way better, obviously not as powerful, but no smoke and still a nice surge of power as the revs rise, spins up nicely to 4,000 rpm if needed, (which is rarely with me driving it!) l think some remaps try to do too much, without other modifications you can easily get a Land Rover that puts out more smoke than an old Cortina. 110mph in a Defender? Hells bells, l wouldn't want to try that, what RPM is it doing at that speed? Or do you mean 110 kmh? |
