Starting to get the hang of it - more art than science.
Couple of bits of learnt: 1) A good inch of ash at the bottom seems to really help with a nice consistent burn (initially I was clearing too much out); 2) I'm using a mix of wood, some really dry kiln dried oak (~8% moisture) to get it started and then the local ash (~15%) once it's properly going; 3) I'm putting the kindling under the oak (about 8 sticks built like jenga), with a natural firelighter (the shredded wood and beeswax ones) and then adding some additional shavings from any of the oddly shaped kindling (I over sharpened my hatchet so use that to produce the shavings); and 4) I'm adding additional wood when the previous log is just about to lose its shape and cranking the airflow wide open until the new log catches. The air flow is really controllable to be fair to it. I'll leave it wide open until the oak has burned down and then add another log. Once that has caught I then close it all the way and give it a small nudge to open it a crack. I find it mesmerising and constantly catch myself staring at it rather than the TV. 2011 CSW XS 90 |

Is that a Hwam log burner? We've got one and excellent. I use normal kindling etc and to lite. As soon as fire starters are lit I screw up a loose sheet of newspaper and let that burn to the side of kindling with the door closed and ash draw cracked open. It creates the chimney to start drawing stopping any smoke in the room. Then with a second sheet of newspaper open the door when it has condensation on it caused by heat and wipe off the glass. Saves cleaning between fires. |
