Hi Land Rover brothers, greetings from Sweden.
I have an issue with my Defender 2.4 PUMA. When I drive in 6th gear, the engine switches off when it goes uphill and the temperature gauge goes up to max. When I shift to 5th gear, the car starts to drive again when the temperature gauge is normal ! If I take the same route and drive the same route in 5th gear, nothing happens. Very mysterious. I have checked oil and coolant and everything is fine. I have replaced the thermostat and cooler hoses. Are there any who have experienced the same thing and possibly have an idea of what is wrong? I'm literally just going through this issue now!
https://www.defender2.net/forum/topic75278.html It's looking like my issue might be related to the Heater Control Valve so worth having a look at that to see if theres any traces of coolant around it. |

Replace thermostat and fit a fan spacer sorted mine out no probs 2008 110 2.4 XS Utility (Hagrid)

Just replaced the thermostat.. What is a fan spacer , adn can i change it myself ?

I just changed the heater control valve half a year ago.. Didnt fix it. How is your status with the problem ? Defender 110 Puma 2.4 tdci |

My issue started out of nowhere. There's no smoke, vibration, dodgy sounds or fault codes. The car runs perfectly except for this one issue. When it happens, the temp gauge goes to red quickly and the fuel cuts off until the temp drops back down - about 10 seconds. I found when this happened, coolant would then be released via the coolant cap.
I chaged the VCV, MAF, MAP, EGR Cooler, Coolant - Wasn't that. I had the EGR properly blanked off and re-remap - didn't make a difference. I cleaned the new MAF & MAP with a contact spray and inspected all the electrical connections and the harness to check if it was rubbing on anything - all fine, wasn't that. I felt the coolant pipes for firmness and inspected the radiator to make sure it was working - Hot in one corner and generally cold everywhere else and no visible signs of leaks - seems to be fine. I did a chem test to see if gas was leaking into the coolant system - came back clean. The only sign I have that something is wrong is the heater valve leak and I only found this because I started to clean and check every hose in the engine. I have a nanocom wired up so that I can see the real-time temp and did a test drive with the heater on. I found that the temp was stable and for the first time in a while it didn't cut out going uphill in 6th. I'll replace the heater control valve this week and see if it makes a difference. If its not this then I'll take a closer look at the radiator and I'll probably change the thermostat for the one that opens at 82 degrees. |

WOW - you have really done a lot of fixing!
Ill go for the fan spacer as i have been looking into it, and it seems like LR has done it on the 2.2 tdci, but not to the 2.4 tdci. Many of the 2.2 tdci hasent got the same problem as we have. You want to fit the thermostat below it opens at 82c rather than 88c so forces cooling to happen more quickly and avoids overheat

Just ordered a fan spacer and a new 82* celcius thermostat, i will hope it helps. We are going on a holiday in december in Norway, there is a lot of steep hills to climb. So it would be great not to have the issue on the trip. Defender 110 Puma 2.4 tdci |

Hi All
I have the same issue. I understand that the lower temp thermostat and fan spacer may resolve the issue but something must have failed to cause the issue. Our Defenders were fine with the normal thermostat and without a fan spacer for many years. Now suddenly they need them ? For some reason the engine is now generating more heat than the cooling system can handle, It would be great if we can locate the root cause of the problem. Or you guys think that this is age/mileage related ? Mine is a 2010 with 160,000 Km I'm still rebuilding my engine so once completed I will test and update the threads. Kev |
