Yup at 35-40 degrees you feel mighty vulnerable
 Usually folks have a pretty good sphincter gauge for side slopes and that is around 15 degrees  At 40 degrees your passengers look like they are about to fall down on you

Just realised the Pumas were rated at 35 degrees rather than 40 degrees as with earlier defenders. Guess they really did put on weight after the TD5.

No idea never seen one. However I suppose you could do this with two winch equipped vehicles placed on either side. Not quite the same but it would find the tip over point without actually tipping over the vehicle. |

There are plenty of factory photos from the early days of a similar demonstration being done using an old-style vehicle lift, the type with a central ram and an "H"-shaped platform. Two wheels on the lift, two on the ground alongside the lift, and up you go. No safety chains either, unlike the 'bus.
It's been a long time since I saw one of those lifts. Back in the late 70's I worked at a garage which still had one, along with a new-fangled four-post lift which, in comparison, was space-age technology! |

Oops, too far!
Actually this was done carefully to allow me to weld the chassis, but it did result in some strange looks from neighbours. It was staggering how far I had to jack the offside before it went over - it actually only fell about two feet before the block tied to the roll-hoop landed on the tyre that is supporting it. Tipping it back was far more exciting because I only had to jack the roll-hoop about the same two feet back before it self-righted in a spectacular fashion. Sadly it was before the days of phones with video cameras built in so I wasn't able to capture the event. Some years after this I replaced the chassis with a new galvanised one since there really wasn't enough left to weld to of the original. |

There is a very nice, proper offroad driving technique on you tube -
At about 35mins into the video, there is a brown pants moment. That is an old 90, V8 3.5 engine with 205 tyres. We had a tilt bed at Carmichael in Worcester, as every fire engine / crash rescue truck had to be tilt tested when complete.
Don't forget a static tilt test is worlds apart from a dynamic test where even a little irregularity on the ground or change in steering angle will dramatically reduce the tilt over angle. |
