Oil Serve Due Warning
My oil service due warning has come on in the dash, and I only had an oil change service a couple of months ago. The garage who serviced it say it just needs re-setting, which they did, but it's coming on again. How do I reset it please ? The oil looks fine and there's plenty in there.

Sorry it's the 2.2 Puma not the 300 Tdi (obviously) Puma 90 XS Station Wagon in Keswick Green 2012 2.2 Tdci

to reset oil service message counter

Turn the ignition key so all dash lights come up, but do not start engine.
Immediately depress the brake and accelerator fully down simultaneously.
Keep them pressed down for 15 plus seconds, the oil light ( oil can symbol) should start flashing.
Now turn ignition key off , remove key, then simultaneously release brake and accelerator peddles.
Wait at least 2 minutes
Turn ignition and the oil service message should not appear and the counter has been reset.

More details here on what’s happening

A quick engine oil dip stick check might be wise, hopefully the levels not increased since last service.

So just to clarify the facts.

1. Did the oil service message come up before your garage did your oil service ?
If not it’s likely the oil service counter was not properly reset at the oil service and 12 months or 12,000 miles passed since it was properly reset.

2. How many miles have you done since that oil service?
Very unlikely you have done 12k miles in a a couple of months but just checking. If you have then that will trigger the oil service message

3. If you have done a lot of miles in the last couple of months since the oil service and in conditions that would have triggered a lot of DPF regens (lots of slow in traffic journeys) then that could be the cause, in which case the oil level on the dipstick will have risen quite a bit.

Thank you for your interest,

I have done a few hundred miles since the oil service in July, a thousand at most.

The oil looks in good condition, and is on the max level on the dipstick.

I have performed the service reset successfully and the oil service warning has disappeared.

It is possible that the garage did not know how to reset it. it is a small local concern. Before that is was serviced by LR Salisbury (Westover) 12 months before.

If the warning comes on again I will have words with the garage. I agree it is better to be safe than sorry,

I do some town driving but mostly open A roads. Puma 90 XS Station Wagon in Keswick Green 2012 2.2 Tdci

In which case I expect the garage did not reset the oil service message counter correctly. And it’s been triggered by 12 months passing or 12k miles being done since last reset. You can check for dates and mileage on your service records to see if that’s the case.

Re the oil being high on the dipstick, they may have overfilled a little, noting it says 7 Litres for oil change but some get to top of the dip stick with 6.5 litres or less.

Have a look at this for some background https://www.defender2.net/forum/topic79934.html

So as long as you are happy that the garage actually did an oil service, which I have no reason to doubt, and the dipstick is only showing a few mm above max just do the oil service message reset and keep a weekly check on the oil level. If uneasy drain a litre and then refill to top mark with fresh oil.

EDIT- I read your last message but not the one before. So if oil at top of dipstick and message reset has worked then that’s great. If you get them to do again get them to run through the procedure, or do it yourself even if the message has not come up and you will have reset the counter Very Happy

Wow that is the most detailed "how to read a dipstick" thread I have ever seen. Mine is clearly at the top of the waffle pattern, so not too full, and about where I'd want to see it after a service. Fortunately it is quite easy to read as the oil is dark enough to see clearly.

As you say, it's a case of drive it and see. The garage charged us for the oil and filter on the invoice, and I do trust them, we have used them for 12 years or more, for our various vehicles. They have a fairly good reputation, locally. Puma 90 XS Station Wagon in Keswick Green 2012 2.2 Tdci

Well, it did not come on today, for those who are interested.

I do not think the garage reset it properly.

Now all I need to so is find some diesel so I can actually drive the thing. Puma 90 XS Station Wagon in Keswick Green 2012 2.2 Tdci

After the oil change it was surely somewhere between min & max
( if the garage did a good job for a EURO5 car )

What causes the rising oil level ?

It's polluted with Diesel, because you drove your car on short distance trips.
Each and every interrupted DPF clearning cycle adds Diesel to the oil

Thanks Julie, I am sorry if I have misled you. There is no rising oil level, the oil level is on the upper mark on the dipstick and has stayed there. That is perfectly normal after an oil service.

If the engine oil was "polluted with diesel" as you say, the oil service warning indicator would come on again. It hasn't.

This was simply a case of the garage not re-setting the warning after the service.

Thanks to all for your help. Puma 90 XS Station Wagon in Keswick Green 2012 2.2 Tdci

I've dipped up between min and max levels ever since.
Even on older models and prefer keeping away from these limits Wink
