Morning all,
Has anyone fitted the below MUD branded speaker surrounds into the rear? Mine currently has a two aluminium colour coded shrouds covering the wiring for the break lights/indicators and the wiper and heated window, but they rattle quite badly very loosely fitted. I was hoping these would probably rattle less and also give me the option of adding speakers into the rear in time. I do believe they are more for the Puma models so just wanted to know if these would fit properly? Link to the item: https://www.mudstuff.co.uk/products/mud-rear-speaker-panel |

Yeah weird thing is there is only one screw going into into the wheel arch section securing them. I’ve removed both metal covers and there’s literally no extra screw holes or anything drilled into the body work to help secure it. If I drilled I’d be worried it would just come through the other side and then be visible externally even using very short screws as the aluminium is only very thin. |

That’s very nice where did you buy the kit from? |

Thanks.
I didn't think the MUD ones was practical for me and there wasn't really anything else so I made them myself. |

FWIW, what I did initially, and it lasted for many years, was to mount medium-ish pod speakers to the roof lining itself.
This is what I had - or very similar Click image to enlarge I used a strong piece of fibreboard or plastic card on the back of the roof lining to spread the load of the speakers. They were right in the back corners where the lining is reasonably well supported. I think this is a good place to put speakers because how often do you use that very space, right up in the back of the roof? If I'd kept that arrangement, I had plans to put some sort of reinforcing strip, behind the roof lining, from gutter to gutter, and mount the speakers to that. In the end I've gone for something different, but that set of speakers was up there for easily 10 / 15 years. I have fitted a pair of those MUD speaker panels on a family Defender. It was a bit of a pain to fit the one on the driver side due to the fuel filler intrusion, but would not be an issue on a 300tdi.
Quality wise they are very good, plastic is strong too. IIRC, the aluminum covers have 2 self tapping screws into the wheel arch (they will not be visible from outside). On older vehicles, at the top, they kind of slot in one of the pop rivets that fixes the vertical corner capping. On newer Defenders there is an M4 (or M5) screw. But you can fix the rattle by a bit of 2mm foam double sided tape. Easy to pull off and replace in case you need to access the wiring, which hopefully not needed often, as bulbs can be replaced from outside. 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing 2012 90 CSW, 2.2TDCI, Santorini Black |

I have fitted the Mud speaker panels to my 1998 110 CSW. The edges needed trimming with my dremel to make them fit but once trimmed they fit fine. I also fitted a 12v socket into one of them 1998 300tdi 110CSW

I’ve got high levels fitted too - probably could do with a little more support, but definitely a great location.
I’ve got an additional fastener on my ali covers which fastens from outside. An absolute tragic task to do on the O/S courtesy of the door 😂 |

I fitted these mounts to my 90 a few weeks ago as I upgraded the speakers to a set of Focal PC130.
Really easy to fit but I did need to trim the nearside mount as it didn't quite have enough space for the wiring to go around/through it. The speakers I had were quite poor and I didn't fancy modifying the battered alloy speaker mounts I had plus the rear nearside speaker was sheltered by the storage chest I now have on the wheel arch. I liked that these mounts put the speakers closer to the door. They wedge in really tight and i haven't put any fixing in to secure them either. I don't know if this is because the window trims have all been replaced with later model trims or not so makes it tighter. M Click image to enlarge |

Hi Matt,
Did the later.rear trims fit ok. I'm looking for rear trim for my 1989 but wasn't sure if they would fit as the small rear window surr look quite different. Thanks Stephen |

Here is extract from parts book - there should be a bolt through the body work to hold them. Click image to enlarge |

I fixed mine with self-adhesive Velcro strips. Very secure, no rattles and easily removable to access wiring with no leak paths to the outside.

Hi Stephen, They needed a fair bit of trimming, shaving and fettling for sure, time consuming but luckily for me the guy fitting them was a dab hand at modifying to perfection and the outcome is spot on. I think if he was to do it again though, these later trims would have been sold on and some originals ordered in and fitted. The speaker trims I fitted and they slotted in very easily.
