Remap…should I avoid
Hi,
I have a 2008 110 defender 2.4 and was thinking of having a remap and I’ve heard good things about them from searching the forums.

The defender is well looked after but I have reservations due to its high mileage of 119K miles.
Apart from the “air box mod” it’s all standard but given its mileage is a remap something you would maybe avoid?

Advice or anyone with similar mileage and had it done it would be great to hear how it’s held up.

Thanks

mileage does have a bearing on full big power remaps but at those miles i would happily map one

speak to the tuners you fancy and get their opinion.

Try Bell Auto Services. I've got to say, that I was really unimpressed with the Puma engine (having previously had 300 TDI and TD5 engines), but after a stage 1 re-map its a much improved. I also went with the Nakatenaga RAI as well as it bypasses that restricted air flow to the filter box, that also made a difference. Do it, it makes pulling off at the lights much easier and other than one piece half shafts at the back and the usual Ashcroft mainshaft replacement when I had a new clutch, I haven't done anything else to the driveline to improve it. 90 - Gone but not forgotten

Another +1 for BAS.
I did my truck at 111,000 miles and it improved it considerably.
I’ve also done the air box mod and bigger inter cooler.
If you use all the new found power all the time and thrape the daylights out of it you will probably have problems, but using it sensibly there’s no reason a higher mileage engine can’t deal with a re-map.

BAS ask you about your vehicle and what you want the map for. 2011 130 Utility Body

Another vote for BAS in my 09 2.4, with air box mod and nugget stuff inlet it pulls like a train with an intake growl. Fab stuff 2.4TDCI 90 - everyday brilliance

I recommend Alive Tuning. If you take your vehicle to them they will put it on their dyno and refine the tune to your engine and how it's is performing.

I've used them a couple of times. Very friendly, first class service and they really know their stuff. TD5 hardtop to Puma inspired Poptop - my build thread

Before any map I would suggest upgrading the highly restrictive air intake piping. I.e using the nugget stuff intake upgrade, then look at a BAS intercooler and silicon hose upgrade.
You will notice the engine performance improves with those upgrades alone. Then if you still feel you need more performance your vehicle is now set up perfectly to take full advantage of a tune from any quality tuner.

Note: the standard intercooler is prone to splitting and the hoses deteriorating, and a tune will no doubt push them harder. So good preventative maintenance plus a tune will benefit from a far bigger air intake and performance Intercooler and hoses. So all good things to do to ensure a 119k engine can cope very well with a tune.

I have the same! With that nugget airbox, it really transforms the vehicle Mr. Green

May I also suggest a bigger intercooler Whistle --

I have a BAS remap, airbox mod and a Naka raised air intake on my 175k 2.4.

I wasn't considering a remap but I wanted to blank the egr (as it had failed) and having that mapped out on its own was only a few quid cheaper than a full remap from BAS so I went for it.

Personally I thought the 2.4 was good without it and if we're not for the egr problems I might not have bothered.

Glad I did though. Runs well, pulls well and fuel economy is up.

Thanks for the advice. I’ve contacted a few of the mentioned above to see what they suggest.
BAS seems the most likely as it’s plug a play but the cost is something to consider as she’s already cost me some unexpected (or expected!) issues that’s needed sorting over the year I’ve had it.

Anyone in the Surrey area who have had a remap closer to home that they have experience of?
Also I have put in the Ultragauge dash conversion so don’t want a remap where I need to keep it plugged in.
