The fuel pump on my Td5 has packed up and needs replacing. I’ve been quoted £650 to get it replaced, is this the going rate for a job like this? I’m against cutting a hole in the floor which I know would be cheaper! Instagram @LandRoversofLondon

Mine died last year and was replaced with a genuine unit by a local indy and the bill was near £1K, so £650 sounds quite cheap by comparison.

Get a discovery pump.... exactly the same as defender bar the float arm, which unclips from both types.
disco one is (well, was a few years back) substantially cheaper. |

I fitted a Valeo OEM pump to mine and it was still £200!
I didn’t cut any holes etc, it wasn’t that much work to drop the tank. |

Just be aware that the fuel line connectors on a TD5 can be fragile.
If the plastic connectors break choices are new fuel lines from LR at about £250 or a set of replacement fuel line connectors Brendan |

About £50 cheaper for the VDO disco once to the VDO defender one currently, still both quite painful at over £200 ![]() |

Too right... This is the main reason for not dropping the whole tank and doing the inspection hatch in the floor modification. From experience, so very fragile. I ended up with a Bearmach pump as it was the only one I could get next day. It works well, but is good lord it is much MUCH noisier than the VDO unit I took out. |

I have a replacement pump in my boot currently, awaiting me to have some spare time, or complete failure of the fitted one! Current trick is it won't start when the tank is less than 1/3rd full unless I run a purge cycle first.
Still haven't decided whether to drop the tank or cut the hole though, how have people repaired the hole afterwards? |

Mine is similar, if less that 1/4 of a tank it starts, then cuts out unless I have my foot to the floor and then the engine pulls through and works fine. 1999 Defender TD5 110

Did you find a cheaper source for these connectors?

I did a hole during lockdown.
Fuel pump doesn’t need replacing yet but it’s 20years old so I thought while I had the time I’d get it ready so it’s an easy job when it comes ![]() Click image to enlarge |
