Hi, and welcome to the forum.
"I'd rather not have all the weight of a few bikes hanging off the tow hitch either." Why not? The tow hitch has a trailer nose weight of 250kg if I'm not mistaken, more than enough for a few bikes. Far more chance of finding hitch rack than a special Defender only bike rack. An extender is available to get a standard hitch type bike rack past the spare wheel. https://www.4x4overlander.com/product/naka...gKozPD_BwE |

I meant as in more of I don't want it to be bouncing around. Something more rigid would be better.

Click image to enlarge Hi Before including an emtb to the fleet I bolted an extension part directly to the rear crossmember. The bike rack is the Thule two bike folding bike carrier. A three bike version is available. When parked up the bike rack easily fits in the back of the 90 and hence not worried about not being able to open the rear door very far. So to answer your question yes it can be done with light weight bikes. If the bikes are heavier like my e bike then I refitted my Dixon Bate towbar as I was not happy with the movement once weighted and bouncing over the crap roads we have around here. Alternatively you can do away with the extension piece if you have the spare inside, which is something I also did when competing Hope this helps Click image to enlarge |

Maxxraxx do a version that bolts to the rear of the tow ball. its slightly off centre to the tow ball.
I have both but tbh i just use the tow ball version. You need the swan neck upright to clear the spare wheel but they work well. They do tilt to access the boot but with anything more than 2 bikes its a two man job. https://www.maxxraxx.co.uk/bikes-racks/exp...rier-black |
